Hello Gothamites, episode 4 ‘Ruin’ was this week!
After the explosions at Haven a lot of people are wounded, dead or still missing. Among the ruins they find Gordon’s badge who he gave to William in the previous episode; so we have to assume that he didn’t survive the bomb. The explosion doesn’t sit well with the survivors, after all, Gordon promised them that they would be safe there. In the hectic that follows, Barbara sees an opportunity to kill Penguin but she decided against it and disappears. Because of her disappearance, Gordon and Bullock suspect that she has something to do with it.
Gordon lets Bullock handle everything at Haven as he goes to the Sirens Club to find Barbara. She tells him that she has nothing to do with the bombing and that she is scared that the Sirens Club could be next. So, therefore, she gives him a location where the possible bomber could be hiding to help him catch the perpetrator. Then Gordon is called back at the GCPD because Penguin has shown up. He brings weapons because he also wants to catch the person responsible for the bombing. In order to keep the gifted weapons, Gordon has no other choice than to become ‘partners’ with Penguin.
They can immediately put their new partnership to the test when they go to the location Barbara provided. They are getting shot at when they arrive and Penguin is surprised to find out that it is Victor Zsasz who is shooting at them. Gordon lets everyone create a distraction so he can walk around and sneak up on Zsasz. The distraction works, and Gordon is able to catch Zsasz. Penguin wants to bring Zsasz with him to punish him, but Gordon needs to know if the bombing was part of something larger and takes Zsasz with him.
Back at the GCPD, Zsasz claims that he is innocent and that if he would have killed all those people he would be covered with scars. And his claims are valid because there are several witnesses claiming that they saw him exiting the building on the ground while the explosive was fired from a roof. Then Penguin storms in into the GCPD building and take Zsasz with them to execute a trial. This trial is done in the city hall with a bunch of Haven refugees present. Penguin has called a witness who claims that he saw Zsasz do it and the entire crowd backs him up saying Zsasz is guilty. Penguin puts some more fuel on the fire by turning the crowd against Gordon that even a speech from the latter doesn’t have any effect. When Penguin brings out the guillotine to behead Zsasz, Gordon and Bullock step in with their guns and take him out of the city hall. At a safe distance, at first, Gordon wants to do a shootout with Zsasz but changes his mind and let him go. After drowning his sorrows back at the GCPD, Barbara shows up and they share a couple of kisses.
Somewhere else in Gotham, Nygma wakes up again after what we can assume was an eventful night. He has a suitcase on his bed and a mysterious text on his hand. It is hard to read but he thinks that ‘Inmate 1215’ knows something. He decides that the GCPD is the best place to find records on this inmate and sneaks in. He makes it to the records room undetected, but before he can actually read the file, he is caught by Fox. Lucius Fox isn’t a horrible guy and makes a deal with Nygma; if he helps Fox with finding out who the bomber was, he’ll get the file. Nygma has no other choice and agrees with it. Together they go to Haven to inspect what is left of the bomb. Nygma discovers that the explosive used is the same kind of rocket that shot the Wayne helicopter out of the sky and that it must have been fired from one of the roofs across the street. The rocket blew up the oil tanks in the basement and the pipes used to distribute the oil also spread the fire.
A little while later, Fox and Nygma find the roof where the rocked was fired; the shooter left the rocket case as a clue. Fox is TEVREDEN about the result and takes the case to investigate it. He also gives Nygma the file of inmate 1215. When Fox is gone, Nygma opens the file but gets furious when he discovers that the inmate is already dead. When he looks to his left he sees a woman in a wheelchair riding around in her apartment. Because Fox is already long gone, Nygma decides to pay the woman a visit and ask her if she’d seen something. Apparently, the woman lives in apartment 1215 and when she opens the door for Nygma she mentions that this is not the first time she has seen him. The woman tells Nygma that it was his other persona who shot the rocket. To protect herself she hits Nygma on the head with a statue a couple of times. This triggers some kind of reaction and he memorizes the moment he was on the roof shooting that rocket. To make sure that nobody finds out, he pushes the woman out of the window.
Somewhere else in Gotham, Bruce is still chained to the fence in Jeremiah’s church. It all seems very quiet, but this doesn’t take long because a couple of Jeremiah’s followers enter the room and start to fight Bruce. He can hold off the first two attackers before Alfred comes to the rescue. He relieves Bruce and together they go after Selina. She has followed Ecco to the place where the tunnel towards the mainland is being built. Not sure if this already was the case, but Jeremiah is in charge. The gang has to work in the tunnel themselves, rather than having the children work for them. Jeremiah wants the tunnel to be finished rather soon than later, but the gang leader says that it is not possible. So naturally, Jeremiah kills him. Ecco has taken the new recruits to Jeremiah to introduce them, Ecco and Jeremiah share a dance before Ecco and the recruits leave the place.
Suddenly Ecco is back with a knife and starts to stab Jeremiah, but it is not Ecco. It’s Selina dressed up in Ecco’s dress to take revenge for him shooting her. Then Bruce and Alfred show up to take Selina out of there before Jeremiah’s followers can attack her.
