The Gifted S02E11 – Review and Analysis

In this week’s installation, we get another reverie back to the Von Struckers, in the flashback we see the male counterpoint go to an oddities shop to retrieve the jewelry box (that’s now in present-day Struckers possession) that he had customized and altered in some way with specific modifications. We know that the pair were unmeasurably powerful when united and that that gene has been passed onto Lauren and Andy. But most poignantly, Andreas retrieves his jewelry box, and for good measure obliterates the man who helped him, so knowledge of his box couldn’t possibly be spread.

Later on, Lauren’s dreams also shift, before it was only a connection with Andy that she had through her dreams, but it then appears as if she is reliving the memory of her great great grandparents last battle, causing Laurens powers to manifest whilst sleeping and unknowingly lash out..  But not just any new powers, the exact ones we see her great-great-grandmother using..

Lauren character is actually one that’s getting more and more interesting as the episode continue, after having the music box reintroduced into their lives, Lauren has formed an attachment of some sort to it, forever listening to it and constantly researching the Von Struckers. We see what we can only imagine are her powers morphing, growing and changing. Whether that’s down to her proximity to Andy, or some kind of influence from the music box is still unknowable, but its making for an interesting twist.

We see Lorna finally turning back to the good side, witnessing the full scope of Reeva’s ferocity in order to flip the script. She turns on the Inner Circle, one learning that the new recruits Reeva has brought in were involved in massacres that slaughtered thousands, families, women, children, no mercy. Reeva’s comment that she wants to use them “To hit the humans with such force, so hard that the humans will be too afraid to fight back.”

Thankfully Lorna has ditched the dyed hair and back to her unnaturally natural Polaris green, along with some of her signature sassy eye-rolls whilst looking ever the femme-fatale.

Meanwhile, Jace Turner gets involved in something much darker than previously and literally turns over to the dark side, by letting the murder of an innocent child, that one of his fellow Purifiers enacted, become warped. Instead of telling the police what actually happened, in that the kid was killed not after showing signs of violence or intention to harm, but out of hatred; he lies and covers for him to the police who show up and then subsequently, all of the news and media outlets. The headline brand the dead kid a violent mutant delinquent and the man, a hero. This is fuelling the fire to the countless displays of police aggression and intolerance that have been occurring worldwide, but with specific density in the US, and the members of the police who after committing such atrocities, go free.

In the last scene of the episode we see Marcos and Lorna who got a tip that Reeva was meeting someone outside of headquarters, waiting and observing, and, plot twist. Benedict Ryan (Sandy Cohen from The OC) – the man from the propaganda mutant-hating tv channel comes out to meet Reeva. As with many episodes within the series they do love to end the episode on a turn, the plot thickens.
