Castle Rock is the fictional town in Maine where several of Stephen King’s stories take place, including Cujo, The Dead Zone, and Needful Things. However, it is also the title of the new anthology series on Hulu. The show premiered on July 25th and Hulu released the first three episodes and will then release a new episode each week following. This has turned out to be both a blessing and a curse, because on one side I’m glad I can’t just binge it in one weekend and then be sad that I finished it already (looking at you Stranger Things season two) but it’s also really good that I just want to keep watching it.
Boasting a truly incredible cast, the show stars Andre’ Holland (Moonlight), Melanie Lynskey (Heavenly Creatures), Bill Skarsgård (It), and Sissy Spacek (Carrie). There are a ton of other great actors in it but if I took the time to list out all of them that would be the entire article. What I am trying to say is the acting in this show so far has been amazing,
What’s also fun about this show is that it is not actually based on any of King’s work. This is all totally brand new stuff, but it feels like it could have been written by the master himself. Watching each episode you begin to see each character and how they would translate into a separate King story.
There are also a ton of different references to King’s actual writings. For instance, there is a brief mention and an article written describing a certain rabid dog that terrorized the town. It’ll be a lot of fun to see all of the easter eggs as the season progresses.
So far it has been really scary with the third episode being the best one so far in my opinion. In that, we got to learn a bit more about some of the characters dark backstories as the past has come back to haunt them.
I am completely in love with this show and feel that, as of right now, Hulu has a major hit on their hands and I cannot wait to see what the rest of the season has to offer.
