Is it a horror film? Is it a comic book film? What IS this movie?
We’re a little over a year away from the release of The New Mutants, but there is a lot to unpack in the trailer.

Let’s discuss who the New Mutants are and how this movie plays into the X-Men franchise. 20th Century Fox has been dishing out X-Men movies for the last 17 years. This movie is set to be the 11th movie in the X-Men world, but don’t expect to see any of your favorite characters in this movie. This group of mutants first appeared in a Marvel comic book series in the late 80s and early 90s. The comic later had a relaunch in 2003.
Next, let’s gush about the cast of this film. This movie features some young, up and coming Hollywood talent. Maisie Williams, everyone’s beloved Arya from Game of Thrones. Anya Taylor-Joy, who has delivered some amazing performances lately in movies such as The Witch and Split. Charlie Heaton, aka the brooding Jonathan from Stranger Things. And last, but certainly not least, we have Alice Braga from sci-fi heavy hitters like Elysium and I Am Legend starring as some kind of twisted doctor. With a lineup like this, I am certainly stoked.

From the trailer, we can gather that we have a group of young, possible mutants in some kind of creepy hospital. I say possible mutants because we don’t see any of them use any kind of ability during the trailer. This film could be the X-Men franchise’s first horror film. The trailer packs some seriously spooky settings, dark images, and even a few jump scares. Not to mention the overlay of Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in The Wall” playing during the trailer.
We’ve got a long way to go before our questions are answered, but be sure to check back to The Game of Nerds for more information.
