Well, that was quite an episode wasn’t it? It really makes me wish that John Constantine was a staple of the team. I mean he is the PERFECT fit. A hero literally without a place, and who excels at fighting demons and magic—just like Mallus and Darhk. It’s a damn shame they haven’t been able to make it happen.

I can easily say John Constantine was one of the best parts of the episode. He played a big role in what made this outing really stick out and feel unique. The hour felt like a classic horror tale, made better by the season’s big bad possessing a young Nora in an insane asylum. It felt big and important, yet small and personal at the same time. They also made a strong emotional connection to Constantine himself within the span of an hour, which is admirable.

Not only did we get some John Constantine, but we also got our biggest episode about Mallus yet. This is exciting, because a fault of the season so far is it’s lack of attention and information about this all powerful demon. Mallus is one scary dude, and his power came across every time he took hold of Nora. He truly feels like a force to be reckoned with.

Mallus has a deep connection with Sarah, and the show made sure to stress the importance of that link. While the spirit world they show us isn’t all too interesting itself, it was cool seeing Sarah manipulate his world and use it to bring back our time-stranded team. I’m looking forward to seeing how this will bring out more of Sarah’s demons, as it seemed to hint at throughout the episode. Sarah is a woman filled with darkness waiting to be unleashed.

Now, the episode revolves around the exorcism of a young girl named Emily—or as we have come know her, Nora Darhk. This was a really cool twist that was thrown at us, and giving us the origin of Nora in this manner was a fantastic choice. It really painted her in a tragic light. Darhk appearing at the end to cart Nora away to her fate was harrowing, there was nothing Ray and Zari could do about it.

As the team figured out how to save young Nora, Amaya had her own motives. Upon their entry to the asylum, Kausa attacked the Legends. She lost, and was then taken aboard the Waverider. When Amaya went to talk to her, we were finally given some great character moments for Kausa, moments that helped shine a light on where her motivations stand. This also helps make her more of an intriguing character, more so than the brooding, silent type she has been.

Also, I guess Snart is gone? Is this his big exit that the actor tweeted about a few months ago? If so, man was it lackluster. I never really understood why he was there in the first place—and clearly neither did the character. Even though he did provide some funny moments (his quip after being rescued), I’m glad to see him take an exit. I felt like his presence was an obligation the writers thought they had, but just never properly fleshed out.

A fantastic episode of Legends jump started the Mallus story, and really pushed the season’s arc forward. We got a real taste of his power, and were introduced to the potential six keys to his defeat, thanks to Zari. It’s a shame that we couldn’t keep Constantine, but at least we’re getting a new teammate in Kid Flash fairly soon. With so many people jumping ship though, could more team members be on the way?

Bonus Notes:

  • Mick had some funny lines, but I feel like it was a disservice to leave him (or any character) out of plot due to it being so Mallus heavy.
  • Sarah was working double time have damaged fun with Constantine and hardcore flirting with Ava.
  • When everything was going down in Jitters, where was The Flash? For anyone that watches that show, someone would have showed up.
  • Fun theory time: Mallus is actually Etrigan.
