We know Freeform had wanted in on the Marvel train, gaining series based on Cloak & Dagger as well as New Warriors, but while the former had been in production for awhile and even had a trailer released, New Warriors was still very much hush. Well, news of the casting has finally been released and now we can get a better idea of just who will be donning the costumes of the young cast of superheroes.

Most notable on the cast list is Milana Vayntrub, who has gained some star power with her appearances in This Is Us as well as a few AT&T commercials. She’ll be playing Doreen Green aka Squirrel Girl. Doreen is a totally empowered fangirl who happens to have the incredible powers of a squirrel. Her greatest quality is her optimism and her best friend is a pet squirrel, Tippy Toe.
Derek Theler (Baby Daddy) is Craig Hollis aka Mister Immortal. As the name implies, Craig can’t die…or so he says. At the beginning of this series, Craig’s still not made use of his immortality – he figures if he has all the time in the world to learn how to do anything heroic, what’s the rush? This is a change of the comics in which he had been dying regularly since his youth.
Jeremy Tardy (Dear White People) takes on the role of Dwayne Taylor, aka Night Thrasher. Brilliant and noble and maybe a bit full of himself, Dwayne is a shameless self-promoter and entrepreneur who also deeply believes in justice. Typically the leader of the New Warriors, Taylor actually has no powers himself, but makes uses of technology and his martial arts skills to make due.
Calum Worthy (Austin & Ally) will play Robbie Baldwin, aka Speedball. Robbie is an impulsive people-pleaser with a misplaced sense of confidence who throws kinetic balls of energy that are completely out of control. Sadly, whenever I think of Speedball, I think of Penance, the superhero he becomes after the incident that kicked off the comic version of Civil War. Seeing as this is billed as more of a comedy than other Marvel properties, I don’t think we’re going that far.
Matthew Moy (2 Broke Girls) will portray Zack Smith, aka Microbe. Zack is a shy hypochondriac who has the ability to talk to germs, which can tell him where you’ve been, what you ate and who you hung out with. It’s impossible to keep secrets around him.
And finally, Kate Comer (The Comeback) rounds out the cast as Deborah Fields, aka Debrii. Deborah is proud, funny and quick witted. Confidently out as a lesbian, Deborah is a low-level telekinetic — very low. She’s lucky if she can lift a paper cup on a good day.
Marvel’s New Warriors is set for premiere in 2018 on Freeform with Kevin Biegel serving as showrunner and executive producer, with Marvel’s Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory as executive producers.
