The name Lara Croft isn’t unknown in both the video game and movie industry. With a total of over 20 games, you could say that Lara is a major icon of the video game industry and one of the best-selling video game series of all time. Previously, Lara Croft was brought to the big screen in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider in 2001 and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life in 2003, with both times Angelina Jolie in the title role. Although The Cradle of Life wasn’t a huge success and it has been over a decade since we’ve had a Lara Croft movie, it is official that we are getting a Tomb Raider reboot. Filming has just begun, but here is what we know so far:
Because filming has just begun, much is unknown about the plot. But we do know that the most recent Tomb Raider video games, from 2013, play a big role in the inspiration for this movie. The video games focus on a younger Lara Croft on her first big adventure, and that is something we probably will see in the movie as well. I did some digging on the internet and I found a possible directive for the movie:
Lara will set out on her first archaeological expedition to finish her father’s archaeological research and uncover ancient secrets in order to clear his disgraced name. Tragedy hits when her adventure turns into a fight for survival. She must use her strength and harness her skills in order to survive a crazed Island cult and unlock mythological secrets surrounding her mysterious whereabouts.
The director, Roar Uthaug, also said about Lara Croft “I think making Lara Croft feel like a real human being, that’s definitely something we want to bring to the big screen as well. I think we’ll want to make people relate to Lara as a character. I’m hoping to bring some of my Norwegian sensibilities to the franchise. Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark was one of my favourite films growing up, so it’s definitely a dream to work in that kind of genre. I think we’ll want to make it feel like a modern action movie and to make what’s going on feel like it’s going on for real.“
Add to it that Walton Goggins called the plot “Raiders of the Lost Ark meets a genre version of the Joseph Conrad novel Victory: An Island Tale” and you know it’s going to be an awesome movie! If you aren’t familiar with the novel Walton Goggins mentioned, Victory: An Island Tale is a 1915 psychological tale about a man who ends up living on an island in what is now Indonesia due to a business mishap. Though complex, the story deals with the effects of isolation (especially on an island) and how that can blur the lines between what is civilised and what is barbaric.
Speaking of Walton Goggins, he has been cast as the film’s villain. And looking at his recent discography, it shows many movie and tv shows that prove that he would make an excellent villain. He will take on the role as Father Mathias Vogel. In the games, Mathias is an inhabitant of the island and is the writer of the Diaries of a Madman. He sets up a cult, the Solari Brotherhood, where the other survivors on the island completely obey him as they worship the Sun Queen.
Daniel Wu will play Lu Ren, the ship captain who helps Lara in searching for the father. It doesn’t say much about the plot or what his role will be, but we can expect a lot of fight scenes on the sea as it includes a sea voyage.
Dominic West will play Lord Richard Croft, Lara’s father. He is an aristocratic archaeologist who is also a key figure in the mythology of the games. The character was previously played by Jon Voight in Angelina Jolie’s Tomb Raider movies. Although the overall size of Dominic West’s role in this reboot remains a mystery, he will have a large presence in the story.
Alicia Vikander will play the main role of Lara Croft. She was cast after it was announced that Angelina Jolie would not be returning to the role. Alicia wasn’t the first to be considered for the role, Daisy Ridley was too. But due to the Star Wars films, she had to say no to Lara Croft.
This is all we know so far! Tomb Raider is set for release on March 16th, 2018.
