This episode is called “Not Everything’s About Annalise,” but I wish that it was about Annalise because I found this episode boring as hell. Its only saving grace was Michaela. They need to get Annalise the hell out of jail because I can’t take a whole rest of the season with her silent and brooding while the squad runs the show. Don’t get me wrong, Viola Davis does silent inmate well, because she does EVERYTHING well, but it’s #NotMyAnnalise and I’m ready for it to end.
Flashback to Wes and Frank in the car, having a super awkward convo that inevitably turns to the subject of Laurel. It’s a bit of a “whip it out and see who is bigger” type of situation and it’s such a tired trope my brain turns off. There’s nothing I find more tedious as a plot device than a love triangle so I can’t even spend another moment talking about it.
In the present, Annalise is dragged to the police station in the middle of the night for questioning by the detectives. They want to talk to her about Frank, which is dangerous territory for all of them and it would be super helpful to have her lawyer present but Bonnie isn’t picking up her phone… way to go Bon-Bon. I’m starting to see why she thinks she’s a shitty lawyer. Either way, Annalise knows better than to talk without a lawyer present.
The reason Annalise is dragged in is, of course, Frank’s confession. Frank has told the detectives that he killed Wes when he found out that Laurel was pregnant, and that he’s only confessing because he didn’t know Laurel was in the house and feels guilty for hurting her. He points them to the video footage of Wes getting in his car just to make sure he gets arrested. When Bonnie finally decides to show up, she sees him being taken away in handcuffs by the detectives. He confesses to her and tells Bonnie to tell Annalise he is sorry.
Michaela, Connor, and Asher get called into president Hargrove’s office for one of those “we care about you but really we want to cover the college’s ass” meetings that tends to happen at places like Middleton. Michaela calls her out on it and it gives me life in an episode that didn’t really do it for me.
Bonnie finally meets with Annalise and tells her that they are going to charge Frank with the murder. Atwood will have to drop the charges against her and she’ll be out soon. After Bonnie shat the bed on the bail issue, Annalise is less than confident in her abilities. Meanwhile Atwood is trying to convince the ADA Denver that, just because Frank is being charged doesn’t mean that Annalise wasn’t involved. Denver wants Nate back on the case and they tell him to go see Laurel in the hospital to check out Frank’s story. Nate knows damn well that Frank has only confessed to save Annalise’s ass.
Nate tells Laurel straight up that he’s there on behalf of the DA’s office and asks her when she knew she was pregnant. Before she answers, he tells her Frank confessed. She refuses to answer, kicks him out, and calls Bonnie while Meggy lurks sketchily in the hallway. Bonnie confirms that its true and asks her if Frank knew about the baby. Laurel tells her the truth: she didn’t know herself until after the fire so Frank couldn’t have known. All signs point to Frank covering for Annalise.
Bonnie tells Michaela, Connor, and Asher about Frank’s confession and tasks them with finding the DA’s evidence against Frank. She tells Connor to tell Oliver to hack the DA’s office but he refuses and tells them that he told Oliver about Sam. Another fantastic Michaela moment ensues where she rips him a new one for opening his dumbass mouth. Finally Bonnie stops the children bickering to tell them that Annalise is losing her shit in prison and that, regardless of what they think about her, they have to help her get out.
Back in prison hell, Annalise is taking a bunch of shit from her cellmate who got her hands on a newspaper and knows what she’s being accused of. Annalise just totally folds in on herself and Viola is acting with her eyes and she’s SO GOOD but I miss when she, you know, had lines and spoke them.
Meanwhile, Meggy is going a little Single White Female on Laurel and I don’t really know what that’s all about except that I do not like it at all. Meggy is asking a whole lot of questions and gets caught in a lie and Laurel basically throws her out. It feels like they are trying to set up Meggy as the real killer which is annoying because she seems like a nice, smart girl and the whole “woman scorned murders ex-lover” thing is played out.
In another stellar Michaela moment, the squad goes to see Oliver and she takes charge of the situation. Connor has screwed them with his big, fat mouth and the chip on his shoulder and now Momma Michaela has come to take charge and fix it. She’s Baby Annalise in this episode and I love it. Also I love watching Michaela tell Connor to shut up. It doesn’t take long for Michaela to get Oliver to hack the DA.
Atwood is doing her damndest to keep Annalise in prison but Nate struck out with Laurel so she goes to see Frank herself. He has waived his right to counsel and Atwood goes to work on him, accusing him of lying for Annalise because of their history together.
Annalise has a prison shower incident, because every show with a prison setting has to have a shower incident, and she’s saved by Jasmine, the older cellmate who has taken her under her protection. Jasmine doesn’t f**k around so Annalise really lucked out there. She gives Annalise a razorblade for protection and it seems like if Annalise doesn’t get out of there soon, things are gonna get even uglier. The Secret Santa exchange is interrupted by a surprise visit from Hargrove. She seems genuinely concerned about Annalise’s well being but Annalise isn’t particularly interested in having a heart to heart about her feelings.
Michaela is back in action, ripping into Connor while Asher tries to console Oliver by telling him that he was also out of loop on the whole Sam murder thing for a while. Oliver is more concerned with hacking and he finds the mother lode of evidence they are gathering on Annalise, including all they have on Rebecca. Bonnie shows up and they straight up ask her if Frank killed Rebecca but she says no since, you know, SHE did it. Oliver keeps digging and finds out that they are investigating her for Sam, the Hapstalls, Sinclair, Lila Stangard—basically every deep dark secret that they’ve all been trying to hide is coming back to bite them in their collective asses.
Bonnie goes to tell Annalise that she’s basically screwed and she needs to make a deal and put it all on Frank. They end up meeting with Atwood but Bonnie is totally ineffective yet again. Atwood takes the opportunity to get into Annalise’s head about taking advantage of Wes and Annalise finally loses it on her. Unsurprisingly, Atwood denied the immunity deal. Annalise returns to her cell and uses the razorblade to dramatically cut out her weave—next to everything Michaela, this is the highlight of the episode.
While Bonnie is failing miserably at getting Annalise out of prison, the squad (minus Oliver) go to visit Laurel to fill her in. They get in a spirited argument about the feasibility of fleeing the country to a place with no extradition treaty before Laurel tells them that Meggy is acting sketchy as hell. They end up hanging out and watching Golden Girls in Laurel’s hospital room until Bonnie returns and kicks them all out to talk to Laurel alone. She tells her that only she can fix the situation.
Asher tries to seduce Michaela with one of the most ridiculous roleplay situations I’ve ever had to witness (all I’ll say is it involves a German masseuse named Gustav) and she goes for it. Meanwhile, back in Coliver hell, they have ANOTHER conversation about their relationship and I just honestly can’t with them anymore. How many times must I scream at my television IT’S NOT GONNA WORK OUT before someone hears me?
Laurel decides to talk to the detectives again. She has decided to take one for the team and lie to them, telling them that she told Frank about the pregnancy before the fire. She also says that she’s remembering more as the drugs wear off. She claims that she saw Frank in the basement before the explosion and he ran out of the storm door. It’s enough to get Frank officially charged with Wes’s murder. Unfortunately for Annalise, Atwood isn’t about to let her go. It turns out Frank was charged as Annalise’s co-conspirator so she is still totally screwed.
In flashback, we’re back in the car with Frank and Wes. Wes accuses Frank of killing Rebecca. Frank is still trying to keep up the “Rebecca ran away” lie but Wes knows it’s bullshit. Wes basically tells Frank that he’s gonna go back to the police and rat (which was maybe not the best move). He gets out and starts walking back and Frank calls Bonnie to tell her that Wes knows that Rebecca is dead. Bonnie tells Frank to follow Wes and not to lose him. Could Bonnie be the mastermind behind this whole thing? It’s certainly possible since we already know what she’s capable of (RIP Rebecca). We’ll just have to continue to watch to find out #WhoKilledWes.
