Once again, the episode starts with the doctors carpooling. Meredith, the driver, asks Alex how he is, but Maggie starts ranting about herself. She feels she’s lost her power since being rejected by Riggs. Meredith clarifies that she was asking Alex, and Alex says, “it sucks, but I’m fine.” He’s starting his first day on clinic duty.
Arizona, back from getting her daughter, Sofia, settled in New York with Callie and Penny, sees DeLuca for the first time since Alex’s attack. DeLuca is her roommate, and even though she isn’t close to him, she’s disgusted with Alex for doing that to him. (If she thinks she’s disgusted with Alex now, she should have seen DeLuca two episodes ago.) DeLuca asks Arizona if she wants him to move out because of everything that happened. She said she wanted him to stay. Later, Arizona confronts Alex about not answering any of her calls or texts. Alex didn’t want to talk to her because he knew she was mad at him, and that scolding isn’t going to make a difference or change what already happened.
Amelia, still on her newlywed high, is bragging about married sex, which annoys Maggie since she was recently rejected by the guy she likes. Maggie says that Amelia is ‘sex rich,’ and that it isn’t polite to brag in front of people who are ‘sex poor.’ Riggs comes into the room briefly, and it gets awkward. Amelia can tell that she’s out of the sister loop, and Maggie fills her in about her Riggs situation. Amelia can’t wrap her head around Riggs turning Maggie down.
Bailey asks Ben to pick Tuck up, because there had been an incident at school. There’s a seven-car pile-up in the pit that Ben doesn’t want to miss. Someone ran into a funeral procession just before it reached the cemetery. The limos ran into each other and the hearse, and everyone injured is related. Ben calls it ‘hot mess art.’
The person who caused the crash, Kara, was an estranged daughter of the deceased man. She hasn’t seen her family in over ten years, and only went to the funeral to tell her father that she loved him. She’s pregnant, but none of her family members know. When her family finds out that she was there and that she caused the accident, they are pissed.
While waiting for elevators for to get their patients to surgery, Meredith tells Riggs that she doesn’t like telling her sister that she can’t have a good thing. Riggs teases Meredith for referring to him as a ‘good thing.’
April visits the hospital with Harriet. Now that her incisions have healed, she’s been instructed to walk around. Jackson suggested she walk around her nice neighborhood, but April had heard about the big wreck and wanted to check it out. Jackson points out that the ER is probably not the best place for a newborn baby, so she leaves Harriet with him and takes off down the hall.
Georgia, the mother of the injured and the widow of the deceased, asks Amelia for updates on everyone, and to see her husband’s body. The morgue claimed it isn’t their job because the body is already embalmed, and the funeral home isn’t in a rush to retrieve it. Georgia tells her dead husband about how much of a miracle it is that Kara came home.
Arizona complains to Owen about Alex’s felony charges. Owen had punched Riggs in the hallway, and he didn’t face any serious consequences, such as criminal charges or being exiled to the clinic. Kara is getting a CT scan, and asks Arizona if he mom knows that she’s here. Kara starts crying when Arizona answers ‘yes,’ and reminds her that she needs to stay still for the scan to be accurate.
The funeral home comes to get the body. At first they think Georgia is being dramatic, grief-stricken, but they soon realize she’s having a heart attack. After 42 minutes of trying to revive her, Maggie says they have to call time of death. When the news of their mother’s passing makes it back to the kids, Kara’s siblings yell at her, and the stress causes problems that send her into an emergency surgery.
Once Tuck is at the hospital with Ben, Ben asks him what his mom has said to him. Tuck says he hasn’t seen her. Ben finds Bailey and asks her why she hasn’t brought down the hammer yet. Later, he reminds her that she isn’t a single parent. Tuck’s father, “Mr. Fun Dad” may not be any help in the discipline department, but Tuck has three parents.
“You need a bad cop. Deputize me.”
Newly deputized bad cop, Ben, shows Tucks pictures of DeLuca and his scans. He over-exaggerates a little, saying that Alex is in jail and DeLuca is now blind in one eye and may never get to really be a surgeon because of it.
Amelia asks Maggie what Meredith says when Maggie tries to talk about Riggs. Maggie thinks that Meredith acts like she doesn’t want to hear about Maggie’s boy drama with Riggs, and that it makes Maggie feel like she’s been annoying. She makes a comment about wishing she could forget things like Meredith does. Amelia points out that Meredith doesn’t forget about things. Meredith just buries the problems, and they always find a way to come back out.
The family is holding a small funeral at the hospital, since they are already dressed and ready for the occasion. The other daughter, Megan, is freaking out because she was holding her mom’s hand, and the hand squeezed hers. The doctors try to explain to Megan that it’s just residual reflexes. That the muscles were stiffening and having spasms. Then Georgia sits all the way up. After an hour of being dead, she’s suddenly alive. Lazarus syndrome.
Stephanie, Amelia, and Maggie say possible reasons the Lazarus syndrome could have occurred. This has only been reported 38 times since 1982. All Georgia had wanted was to die holding her husband’s hand. She got to do that and then come back to life. Stephanie says “Sorry if I’m amazed.”
April and Alex loiter around the ER, missing the pace of trauma and the hospital. April keeps yelling instructions through the window at those who are actually working on patients, and saying “I cannot wait to get back here.” Alex recognizes the fact that there’s a possibility that he may never get to be a surgeon again.
Riggs tells Meredith about Georgia coming back to life an hour after dying, and asks Meredith if she ever has that miracle dream where your deceased love one comes back to life. Initially, she says no, but then she comes back in the room and tells the truth – in her dream, Derek knocks at the door and apologizes for being gone so long.
Georgia asks how Kara is. Her kids are angry that she asked. They say things like, “I’m sure she’s fine” and, “Yeah, she always walks away from the wreck.” Amelia reminds them that Kara is their sister, and that this miracle happened today, and that they should be celebrating this miracle. Their sister came back, and their mother came back from the dead.
Kara sees her baby and is relieved that she didn’t mess him up. Her brother and sister come to her room to visit, and Kara apologizes. Then they tell her that mom is okay.
Jackson realizes that April is bored and that that’s why she has spent her entire day at the hospital. April talks about the joys and amazements of motherhood, but that then it fades and Harriet goes back to sleep. She stares at Harriet while she’s sleeping, and it’s boring. Jackson takes Harriet so April can check out more things happening in the hospital.
Tuck gives his mom his phone, saying she can hold onto it for two weeks. He plans on apologizing to the kid, Marcus, and tells her that he will never do this again because he doesn’t want to go to jail. Bailey is very pleased with how Ben handled things, and wonders why she didn’t deputize him as bad cop a long time ago.
Amelia confronts Meredith and tells he that she is going to listen to whatever Maggie wants to talk about because that’s what a sister does. Maggie suggests that she and Mer go get something to eat. Not wanting it to be a one-way street, Maggie asks Meredith if there’s anything she needs to get off her chest, such as a new guy in her life. Meredith says no.
When delivering Kara’s baby, Arizona had told someone to page Dr. Karev. Realizing that he’s momentarily banned from the OR, Arizona gets angry at him. Her patients deserve the best pediatric surgeon. Alex is the best, and his mistake is robbing them. Alex tells Arizona that he is going to spend his time in the clinic and do whatever else he needs to do to get back to pediatrics.
Exactly how long does Meredith think she can hide her relationship with Riggs from Maggie? When will April and Alex get back in the OR? Is Webber ever going to have any kind of plot surrounding him? Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 8/7c!
