Where we left off after season 12
Meredith went on her first date after Derek’s death with military surgeon Major Will Thorpe. Things fizzled and toward the end of the season, Meredith hooked up with Nathan Riggs, whom Owen Hunt blames for the death of his sister.
One brief freak out and runaway bride situation later, Amelia and Owen got married.

At Amelia and Owen’s wedding, Maggie admitted to Meredith that she really likes Riggs, unaware that he and Meredith already had a thing going on.

After a season of turning down Karev’s marriage proposals, a drunk Jo confides in DeLuca that she is already married to an abusive man that she has been hiding from for years. Oh, and that Jo Wilson isn’t her real name. Alex walks into his loft, sees the two of them in what looks like a compromising position, assumes Jo is cheating on him, and brutally beats DeLuca.

Stephanie and Jo are on the outs when Jo tells Shepherd that Stephanie lied about being born with Sickle-Cell Disease. When Amelia believes Jo over Stephanie, the issue of racism comes up. She was also dating a patient, Kyle (guest star Wilmer Valderrama), until it meant she could no longer be his doctor. She hated being ‘the girlfriend in the waiting room.’

Bailey became Chief of Surgery, which caused some problems in her marriage, specifically when her husband, Ben, an intern at Grey Sloan Memorial, botched an unauthorized emergency c-section in the psych ward (using the metal part of a clipboard he found). As the Chief, Bailey suspended Ben for six months.

Callie and Arizona go to court for custody when Callie plans on moving Sofia to New York to live with her girlfriend, Penny. Arizona wins, despite not being the birth mother, due to the issue of stability in the child’s life – to move Sofia to New York would be taking Sofia from her home and her support system. Callie breaks up with Penny and stays in Seattle to be closer to her little girl. Arizona decides ‘Sofia deserves to have two happy moms’ and decides to split custody with Callie, and soon Callie and Sofia are on their way to New York.

Jackson and April get divorced, but not before conceiving a baby. In the finale, April goes into labor at Meredith’s house, with only Ben around. There’s a storm outside, and the ambulance is taking too long. Ben is going to deliver April’s baby, but they soon discover the baby is breach. Ben calls the hospital, and with Bailey, Jackson, and Arizona on speaker phone, Ben successfully performs a c-section. With April and the baby safe, Ben’s actions redeemed himself with Bailey.

The upcoming thirteenth seasons is said to be focusing on the original cast members, and promos show the premiere (September 22, 2016 at 8/7c) dealing with the aftermath of Alex’s assault on DeLuca, as well as hinting at Jackson’s mother being unhappy about her new grandchild’s name.
