Steel Ball Run is racing across Netflix right now with new episodes dropping weekly, and it felt like the right time to give the entire Joestar bloodline its due. Nine parts, nearly forty years of story, and one family that keeps producing protagonists who refuse to accept the world’s terms for what is possible. That is the whole appeal of JoJo. Every generation gets weirder, every Stand gets more creative, and every single JoJo finds their own version of the same unbreakable resolve.

Five quotes, five generations of the family, all of them determined to make it to the finish line their own way.

1. “I’m fighting to protect my family from those that wish it harm. I doubt very much that your resolve is equal to mine.” — Jonathan Joestar, Phantom Blood

Jonathan Joestar started it all, and everything the family became traces back to this one principle. He did not fight for glory or power. He fought because the people he loved were worth protecting, and that gave him a kind of resolve nothing else could match.

2. “Like a fine wine, I guess I just get better with age.” — Joseph Joestar, Battle Tendency

Joseph Joestar talks a big game and somehow always backs it up, outsmarting enemies twice his strength through sheer audacity and quick thinking. This line, dropped in the middle of a fight he has already won through cleverness rather than brute force, captures exactly why he remains one of the most beloved JoJos in the series.

Confidence earned through experience is not arrogance. It is data. Whatever you are walking into this week, you have survived every hard week that came before it. That track record counts for something. Wear it like Joseph does.

3. “This is what resolve is. It is to carve out your destined path through the darkened wastes.” — Giorno Giovanna, Golden Wind

Giorno spends Golden Wind infiltrating the mafia from the inside with one singular dream driving every decision he makes. This line lands in the middle of his hardest stretch, after losing people he cared about, and it reframes resolve as something you build through the dark parts rather than something you wait to feel before moving.

Nobody carves a path through easy terrain. The darkened wastes are where resolve actually gets tested. Whatever hard stretch your week holds, that is exactly where the path gets carved. Keep going.

4. “The shortest route is the detour.” — Gyro Zeppeli, Steel Ball Run

Gyro says this to Johnny Joestar somewhere in the middle of a cross country race that keeps throwing obstacles at both of them, and it is the single line that defines the entire philosophy of Steel Ball Run. The setbacks are not slowing the race down. They are the race.

Every detour you hit this week, the delay, the plan that falls apart, the thing that takes longer than it should, is not actually pulling you off course. Gyro would argue it is the course. Trust the path even when it stops looking like a straight line.

5. “The one who will judge you is my Stand.” — Jolyne Cujoh, Stone Ocean

Jolyne says this early in Stone Ocean, a direct callback to her father Jotaro’s own catchphrase, as she manifests her Stand for the first time against an opponent inside the prison she is fighting to escape. It is a declaration that she is not waiting for anyone else to decide her outcome. Not the guards, not the system, not her circumstances.
