BlizzCon is the Blizzard Entertainment Convention where all the major events and announcements for all the Blizzard franchises happen. This includes a peek into the future of these games for years to come, some of the largest esports events, and much more. Blizzard games have long been cornerstones of the gaming industry, genre-defining and innovative games like StarCraft, Diablo, and World of Warcraft have all come from this company. However, in the year 2026, these once great games have been diminished in the minds of many fans and the gaming community as a whole. While Blizzard games are still popular, they are not nearly as popular as they once were. In fact, BlizzCon 2025 was cancelled due to the lack of good content Blizzard had available that year. Therefore, BlizzCon 2026 absolutely must be a very memorable, if not the best, BlizzCon ever. The Opening Ceremony just happened on September 12, 2026, and it has set the tone for the entire event. A lot was announced, so let’s get right into it.
Starting small, the two smallest announcements came from Heroes of the Storm and Overwatch 2. Heroes of the Storm (HOTS) is getting its first new character in six years. Xal’atath, the current major villain in World of Warcraft, is becoming a playable character in HOTS, with nothing more announced for this game. Similarly, Overwatch 2 is getting a single new character and map. Doctrine, a mecha-vampire-themed support character, is entering the Overwatch universe. Along with this, a new map and several existing characters are getting large changes – for example, Sombra is being changed completely and moving from the DPS role to Support. Overwatch 2 has already received 10 new characters this year, so this is not the biggest update for the game this year but still shows that Blizzard is trying to make big moves with the Overwatch franchise.
Moving up the totem pole, the StarCraft franchise and Warcraft III Reforged have received large updates. Warcraft III is receiving its first new campaign questline in 20 years. This takes players into the early World of Warcraft Classic story. Aptly named Forsaken Kingdom, this new campaign takes place during the fall of Lordaeron and rise of Naxramus time period in Warcraft lore. This new campaign is available to play now. StarCraft is also a franchise that has not received an update in a long, long time. The Opening Ceremony announced that the next chapter of StarCraft is in the works. This new game will be a first-person shooter with an open world (likely similar to Bungie’s Destiny franchise), but will not be released until the year 2030… That was everything announced about the new StarCraft.
Middling, Hearthstone is receiving a new set update called Black Empire. It comes with a variety of new cards and 2v2 game mode. This will be released on October 20, 2026. Then, coming in 2027, the Monk class will be released. This will come with a plethora of new cards, mechanics, and more to spice up Hearthstone even more.
Reaching the big-ticket items, the Diablo franchise got two major announcements. The first announcement is that the franchise is partnering with Netflix to create an animated Diablo TV series. It is still unknown what storylines will be followed in this series or when it will be released, but it is confirmed to be happening. The second major announcement is Diablo V coming in 2029. It will be set in a world that has further fallen into the depths of hell, the sanctuary has been lost, and humanity can only find solace in demons. This announcement comes with mixed feelings from the community. On one hand, the Diablo IV release in 2024 was great, but on the other, the developers made decisions that made it quickly fall down hill to the point where it is very unpopular in 2026. Diablo V seems like it is a game that developers are announcing to clean the slate of their Diablo IV failures rather than because it makes sense to release just five years after Diablo IV. For reference, it took 12 years for Diablo IV to release after Diablo III.
The biggest announcement comes from the World of Warcraft (WOW) team. As many people know, there are four different versions of WOW currently: Retail, Hardcore Classic, Classic currently on the Mists of Pandaria expansion, and Season of Discovery. Coming soon, there is a fifth version of WOW that there is a lot of excitement behind. Before that, Retail got two major, but ambiguous announcements. First, the final tier of the Midnight expansion is called “Eclipse” and will ramp up the stakes further as the game readies itself for the final expansion, The Last Titan. Second, The Last Titan will be set in the place where WOW peaked, in Northrend, otherwise known as the land where “Wrath of the Lich King” took place. The rest of the details for these retail WOW announcements are awaiting further details.
As for the fifth version of WOW, World of Warcraft: Forever was announced with extensive details. Forever is known as the Classic plus experience, taking players back to classic 2004 WOW experience with much more new content. This will include over 1000 new quests, a new playable race, new playable zones, updated graphics, new dungeons, and so much more. Not only that, but it will continuously be updated with new content, presumably at a similar cadence to Retail. However, the updates that do come will not outdate and power-creep prior content, instead it will complement existing content offering ever more content that never goes out-of-date. This ever-continuing storyline is what players are really excited about, one that can be dropped and picked back up again without falling behind. WOW Forever will go live on November 4, 2026.
This was everything that was announced during the Opening Ceremony at BlizzCon 2026. For further information, BlizzCon panels throughout the weekend of September 12th and 13th will explain each of the announcements in more detail.

Overwatch and Heroes of the Storm getting only small additions continues the pattern of those games being lower priority. Overall it feels like Blizzard is trying hard to rebuild momentum after a quiet 2025, with mixed success depending on which franchise you care about most.
