You refresh the page at exactly 9:00 a.m. You have your card details saved, your account logged in, your finger on the mouse. The drop goes live.  

By the time the page loads, it’s gone. Sold out in under a minute, for a run of 500 figures nobody outside three Discord servers had heard of a week earlier. 

You didn’t lose to another fan. You lost to a script.  

Here’s where that script is doing the most damage, and how to spot it. 

Sneaker Drops Started This 

A post-sale audit on a sneaker drop from a top 10 brand found that real buyers made up less than 100,000 of the people who tried to check out. Bots accounted for the other 97%. The audit came from Queue-it, which runs virtual waiting rooms that filter bot traffic during high-demand sales.  

That’s not a one-off. A gaming company saw the same pattern across four exclusive drops. They blocked more than 700,000 bots and grew their loyalty program by 40% after switching to invite-only access.  

SNIPES felt this firsthand. The sneaker retailer, which runs releases across the U.S. and Europe, called its drop-day traffic spikes “insane” before switching to a waiting room built to filter bots out.  

Small Shops Aren’t Safe Either 

You might assume the small stuff is safe. A 200-unit figure preorder. A two-person print shop. A drop announced only on Discord. Too small for a bot to bother with, surely. ˇ 

But Cloudflare’s own traffic data says otherwise. As of mid-2026, automated requests made up more than half of all HTTP traffic to the open web: This is the first time bots have outnumbered humans since the web went public.  

Some of that is AI crawlers with zero interest in your grail. A lot of it is scalping software that doesn’t care how small the drop is, only what it resells for. 

Anime Figures And TCG Box Breaks 

A limited Nendoroid preorder runs on the same math as a sneaker release, just at a smaller scale. So does a Funko chase variant, a numbered artist print, or a sealed booster box from a small TCG run.  

All of them have fewer units and just as much demand chasing them, but none of the enterprise-grade bot defense a company the size of Nike can afford. That gap is exactly what a bot exploits.  

It doesn’t care whether it’s checking out a $200 sneaker or a $30 figure. It’s only looking for an “add to cart” button and a fast checkout form, and a small store’s checkout is usually the easier target.  

Limited Collab Watches 

Limited watches run on the same resale math. StockX puts the average resale premium at roughly 48% across limited editions, with some collaborations running far higher. Swatch and Audemars Piguet found that out the hard way earlier this year.  

Full sets of their limited collaboration traded on StockX for a 192% markup within hours of release, then crashed back down within a day once buyers realized supply wasn’t as limited as they thought. 

That crash is the giveaway. Resale prices don’t fall that fast by accident. It means the “sold out in 60 seconds” moment wasn’t real demand outrunning real supply. It was software outrunning shoppers. 

So if you miss a drop like this and the resale price looks brutal on day one, wait 24 hours before you pay. That first spike is usually bots cashing out fast, not real demand holding steady. 

Blind Box Drops Like Labubu 

Blind boxes add a wrinkle sneakers and watches don’t have. You’re not buying a known item, you’re buying a chance at one. A bot doesn’t need to guess right once. It can buy fifty boxes to guarantee the rare pull, then dump the forty-nine it doesn’t want straight into resale.  

Pop Mart and Labubu drops appear in the same tracking sample sneakers do on StockX, watched by the same tools sneakerheads use to catch a fresh Ask.  

When a “limited” run sells out in minutes, and the secret variant is already on resale within the hour, that’s the same software doing what it always does, just gaming odds instead of speed. 

The Common Thread 

Whether it’s a sneaker, a figure, a watch, or a blind box, the tell is the same signature bots leave in any economy they learn to farm, gaming or retail. Data center connections account for 45% of bad bots, almost double the residential share.  

A real fan is on home wifi, running whatever browser update last pushed through. A bot farm runs from a server rack, on a script nobody’s touched in months. 

Detection only matters if checkout backs it up. Baymard Institute found cart abandonment sits around 70%, with checkouts asking for nearly double the form fields they need. None of that friction slows a bot, but it filters out real fans every time. 

Stores that stop bots without punishing fans usually invested in real checkout engineering, the kind that comes from working with top ecommerce development companies instead of a plugin. 

The Fans Were Never the Competition 

Go back to that figure that sold out in under a minute. Popularity didn’t do that. A script built to convert scarcity into profit did, faster than any real fan could load the page. 

You can’t out-click a script, and you shouldn’t have to. What you can do is watch the resale price after a drop you missed. If it crashes fast, you know it wasn’t real demand you lost to.  

And the next time a store you follow switches to a smoother, better-defended checkout, that’s not overhead. That’s the thing standing between you and the bots, finally doing its job.
