SDCC 2026: An Evening With Kevin Smith

As our loyal readers know, every writer is required to cover the San Diego Comic-Con. What happens when most of us are not able to attend? Well, personally, I have to go find social media posts, other publications that do recaps, etc and then do my own based on what I find. This year, I was asked to cover one of my favorite filmmakers’ panel discussions and his event, An Evening With Kevin Smith. 

It was held on the evening of Saturday, July 25th, so I waited until Sunday and Monday to see what I could find. I was lucky to find that another fan recorded the whole thing so I watched the 90-minute time with one of the kindest people. So without further ado, here is my recap: 

Before we began with questions from the audience, Kevin shared meeting the actor Rick Moranis and how touched Moranis was to see the love he felt from fans after so many years, especially since he had retired from acting. Kevin then tells the audience that his favorite film and work of Moranis is actually the 1983 film Strange Brew, starring characters Bob and Doug McKenzie. “Without them, I would not have created Jay and Silent Bob.” He went to Moranis and told him so, and it was a very touching moment.

Then he shared some news: 

-Jay and Silent Bob: Joint Venture, the video game 

-20th anniversary of the steelbook of Clerks II 

-He wrote a comic book for Marvel and it was so successful that he announced he was asked to write two more where Jay & Silent Bob and Marvel Universe will collide. 

-He teased a book that will come out next year and

-in November, he will be filming a new movie but that is all he can say

The first question from a fan was who his fave Disney princess is, and he answered, “Mulan, I don’t even need to think about it…or Princess Leia since she technically is one.” 

He also shared that this is the first SDCC since his mother died in December. He wants to always remember that he is her son; therefore, he stays humble, gracious, and continues to preach positivity. As he always says, “If I love a film, I won’t shut up about it. If I don’t, I just won’t talk about it; there is enough negativity out there, and I don’t need to contribute to it, especially on someone else’s hard work.”

A man came out with his baby and asked if Kevin would kiss the baby, which he did. Later on, a man came up and said, “I had a question, but actually, will you kiss me?” and they joked with Kevin responding, “Meet me in the alley, I will have a special kiss for you.” 

One of the last questions was from a former Apple employee who shared that there was a legend that Kevin cut the line for the first iPhone in 2007, and they were annoyed, gossiping, and a reporter from WIRED Magazine wrote about it. Therefore, it became a requirement to never talk about celebrities again. The question was to ask for Kevin’s perspective. He remembered that his buddy called to come to The Grove and get an iPhone with him, who was already in line. They were at the beginning of the line for the first two hours of selling the iPhone, he remembers cutting to meet the friend, no one being upset, and he definitely does not remember any bad press during and afterwards. He was delighted to hear how he is even spoken about within Apple. 

MooseJaws was mentioned a few times, but it was almost made, but the final financing fell through. If he could make any other film, that would be it; the script is ready, and Justin Long has agreed to come back.
