SDCC Reveals What We Can Expect from the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is opening soon!

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is a long awaited experience that movie and art lovers all over the country have been anticipating. The museum is founded by legendary creative George Lucas and his wife, Mellody Hobson. In creating this experience as a space for collections of art of several different mediums, “the museum explores how images move us and shape our collective memory” (Lucas Museum of Narrative Art).

Located in Los Angeles, the Lucas Museum has a variety of art to explore. Comics, children’s stories, fantasy, archives, and so many artists with names you’ll recognize. The special thing about this museum being founded by George Lucas is that we can definitely expect lots of art and concepts from the films and projects he has personally worked on. The Lucas Archives are an original educational adventure you won’t find in any other museum! As a leader of the incredibly iconic stories of Star Wars and Indiana Jones, in the archives you’ll find art and magic that spans over four decades of filmmaking.

As the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art continues to grow anticipation and excitement, to promote it’s upcoming grand opening, the leaders of the museum stopped at San Diego Comic Con! On July 23rd, the panel at Hall H was moderated by actresses and absolute icon, Keke Palmer, and featured different board members and leaders of the museum. In attendance was Lucas Museum Senior Curator and Head of Film Programs Ryan Linkof, Seth Green and Matthew Senreich from Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, and DC Comics President and Chief Creative Officer Jim Lee.

In the one-hour panel of the four creatives behind what’s to come for the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, we learned about new programs, exclusive never-before-seen projects, and how this museums’ purpose is to show the connections between human emotions and the art that provokes them.

THE INAUGURAL FILM PROGRAM

At San Diego Comic Con, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art revealed it’s new inaugural film program, demonstrating two different but important facets of filmmaking. One part of the program focuses on showing cinema as powerful medium for telling stories, and the other demonstrates the advanced technology used for creating those visual spaces and storytelling experiences. Both of these ideas will each be represented by their own theatres inside the museum! Wow!

The Robert Flaherty Theater and the Slavko Vorkapich Theater will be screening non-stop film selections throughout the day, so visitors can drop in and enjoy the gallery whenever they like! Both theatres are named after two filmmakers that honor the innovations of cinema, named by George Lucas himself. The goal of these theatres is for museum-goers to enjoy “a living, breathing art form at their own pace,” as said by Ryan Linkof. “Our inaugural programming will shed light on the evolution of film form and the creative process more broadly, tracing a direct line from early innovators to the modern masterworks of visual storytelling that shape our culture today” (Lucas Museum of Narrative Art).

The Robert Flaherty Theater will showcase films dedicated to the process of production, and how filmmakers can create magic using basic elements, like light, motion, and sound. The Slavko Vorkapich Theater will focus on and is dedicated to “the emotion of motion,” showing short films from the early days of filmmaking to the present.

For those of you who have been long-time fans of Star Wars and all Star Wars content, you might want to think about booking a trip to L.A. and visiting the Lucas Museum. A long time ago (in some office far, far away), Seth Green and Matthew Senreich made a parody Star Wars series called Detours. The show, which was announced in 2012, has been sitting on the shelves for over 10 years. But now, at the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, Detours lives on to see the light of day! At the panel at SDCC (San Diego Comic Con), Green said episodes of the show will be on public display in the museum!

So, not only will visiting the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art show visitors the absolute visual magic of storytelling, but you can also get a laugh and watch some never-before-seen episodes of Detours. In addition to leaving the museum feeling inspired and enlightened about all the cinema you love, you’ll also be laughing at Star Wars shenanigans. It’s basically a win-win.
