Welp, this is wild. A whole movie has been leaked almost half a year before it was supposed to come out. Leaks of major, company-produced media do occur often in the online space, but an entire finished movie being released like this out of the blue is very rare. This, of course, happened to Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender. This was supposed to be the planned beginning of the newly formed Avatar Studios. Avatar has been one of the most popular and influential shows of this generation, and Paramount was willing to milk it now, given the fixation on reboots and sequels as of late. However, this leak says a lot not just about the way this franchise has been treated in general, but how precarious and flimsy the treatment of film in general has been with who’s been running it as of late.

Avatar has been no stranger to leaks. Legend of Korra was subject to leaks during its run, and numerous details about the 3rd animated series, Avatar Seven Havens, got leaked a while back. However, this is even more insane considering the implications. This was supposed to be the first of many big projects to continue the Avatar franchise in new directions, including the aforementioned new series. It was planned to come out in theaters last October, but it kept getting pushed back due to needs regarding the production. However, out of the blue, Paramount announced that it would not be going to theaters and instead would be shipped straight to Paramount+ later this year. This came presumably due to the new Skydance leadership at Paramount and their desire for streamlining brands and focusing on their own perception of what they wanted out of their franchises. New heads sandbagging projects greenlit by prior regimes has happened a lot (for reasons I can only assume out of pettiness or ego of wanting their own stuff to be put first), but an entire movie being shafted to the streaming dungeon like this feels like a new low for this kind of behavior outside of cancellations or write-offs. Avatar is still a widely beloved series, and rather than allowing it the opportunity to have a wide audience on the big screen, it is instead going to be used to prop up the sunk cost of a half-dead streaming platform.

However, recently, reports circulated that the film was leaked in its entirety. At first, it was only a few clips, and many assumed that was it. But then, people started circulating the whole thing around. Many in the industry and those associated with the film have both condemned the leak and those who have participated in sharing it. It further undercut the artistic effort and passion of those who worked for years on this movie, as well as the opportunity for the Avatar fanbase to have a huge showing in a more mainstream way. Not only were they all robbed of the chance of having the film get a wide release, but now it’s out in the world by outside means, and it creates an uncertain future for the film. This really does line up with how the franchise never seems to catch a break. The original show, while successful, was still buried within endless SpongeBob reruns. Plus, the fiasco of the live-action film halted future plans of the series and a potential 4th season for a few years. Korra had a huge chunk of its show thrown onto Nick’s website for some reason and had its crew endure poor treatment by the end. The Netflix remake had the original creators leave due to creative conflicts. This movie, both being tossed into being a streaming release and subsequently getting leaked, feels unsurprising and lines up with both the history of how this franchise has gotten the short end of the stick as well as current franchise treatment in general these days.

Honestly, part of me is not surprised at all that a franchise as beloved as Avatar has always been treated as badly as this, and especially today. Marvel has been singing the praises of their successes recently, while also laying off hundreds, including the visual architects of their franchise. Warner Bros threw finished movies into the fire to get quick tax write-offs. There are dozens and dozens of stories of writers and animators who are unable to get work and have pivoted to other careers. The current leadership and mindset regarding running major studios have been driven by short-term gains while disregarding any long-term stability. Paramount is being run by people who are only fixated on image and brand to the point that they are aggressively going to eat up Warner Bros, basically, so they can have more toys to play with. It has been a game of cutting everything down to the bone and leaving everyone else to fend for themselves. It was said that the leaker believed it wouldn’t be a big deal to let this film out due to its streaming release. While I absolutely disagree with his statement, I understand where it comes from since the whole industry feels flippant and wasteful already. A film just getting unceremoniously dumped onto streaming these days feels basically the same impact as it getting leaked. Most of the time, streaming releases are only in the discourse for a short amount of time before everyone moves on, since there isn’t as much time to let a film simmer compared to the more restricted but somewhat more open option of a theater experience. They get forgotten and just become part of the nebulous blob of “content” for services to throw around without a true sense of cohesion or care for the mediums they use.

I feel that this leak is both a sign of frustration about the state of the industry but also how unwieldy it is. An entire movie got leaked, and Paramount doesn’t seem to be that concerned. They’ve only mentioned that it wasn’t an internal leak, but no news about the film’s status or future. If a leak like this can happen here, why should we trust them with Warner Bros.? It tells me that things are getting more and more chaotic, and everyone but the suits who care the least will be affected. The artists and production crew get their work undermined. The fans and potential audience for the film lose a potentially great experience. It really does suck that all of this happened to a franchise that has been so influential yet keeps getting the worst treatment compared to its contemporaries. I sincerely do hope for the best regarding everyone involved and that the film does get an official release instead of getting locked away due to the studio not seeing any financial benefit in it coming out.
