For us movie buffs, cinephiles, and all around nerds, we can quote movies like we’re reading from the back of our hand. Learning the lines to our favorite movies is almost like a thing of pride. Being able to quote a movie word-for-word may annoy other people if you say them out loud, but in nerd culture, it’s like giving yourself a little trophy. I compare the feeling to watching The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers with someone else for the first time, and being able to tell them, “Did you know that Viggo Mortensen actually broke his toes in this take?” Quotes and fun facts are all a nerd has some times, and being able to share it with others can be euphoric feeling!

When it comes to choosing the best and most quotable movies in nerd culture, well, it’s a pretty tough challenge. There are simply just too many movies to name. There are so many reasons for what makes a movie iconic, and picking out our favorite quotes is just one way to simplify choosing all the movies that influence and live in nerd culture. There are a lot of movies out there that all play a role in our lives. The references we make, the inside jokes we share, even the media that we watch—sometimes our favorite characters are quoting other favorite characters! It’s quote-ception.

You know them and you love them—here are some of the most quotable movies in nerd culture!

TITANIC

“Leonardo DiCaprio and Oscar nominee Kate Winslet light up the screen as Jack and Rose, the young lovers who find one another on the maiden voyage of the “unsinkable” R.M.S Titanic” (Amazon Prime Video).

Titanic is famous for several reasons, but especially for it’s all-time quotable moments between Jack and Rose.

“I’m the king of the world!” — Jack Dawson

“I’ll never let go, Jack. I’ll never let go.” — Rose DeWitt Bukater

“I’m flying, Jack!” — Rose

Titanic is currently streaming on Pluto TV, Paramount+, and Hulu.

THE SHINING

“A family moves to a hotel and the father starts to experience changes in his personality, as many paranormal experiences take place” (Amazon Prime Video).

When it comes to 80s horror movies, the first one to think of will always be Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. It’s a movie that has been quoted in nearly every show on cable, and it’s probably one of the most parodied movies in pop culture. Even if you haven’t seen The Shining, you know who Johnny is, and that means you might want to start running. Jack Nicholson is coming to get you!

“Here’s Johnny!” – Johnny Torrance

The Shining is currently available to rent or buy on different streaming platforms.

THE AVENGERS

“Nick Fury, director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. The Avengers — Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor and Captain America — assemble alongside Black Widow and Hawkeye to battle an unexpected enemy: the Asgardian God Loki, who commands a powerful Chitauri army threatening global safety and security” (Disney+).

As one of the first big blockbuster team-up Marvel movies, The Avengers is one of the most iconic of it’s time when it comes to the superhero genre. For many of us, it was probably one of the first superhero movies we ever watched!

“We have a hulk” — Tony Stark

Steve Rogers —”Big man in a suit of armour. Take that off, what are you?”
Tony Stark — “Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist”

“And Hulk? Smash!” — Steve Rogers

Marvel’s The Avengers is streaming now on Disney+

STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE

“Luke Skywalker begins a journey that will change the galaxy in Star Wars Episode IV – A New Hope. Nineteen years after the formation of the Empire, Luke is thrust into the struggle of the Rebel Alliance when he meets Obi-Wan Kenobi, who has lived for years in seclusion on the desert planet of Tatooine. Obi-Wan begins Luke’s Jedi training as Luke joins him on a daring mission to rescue the beautiful Rebel Leader Princess Leia from the clutches of Darth Vader and the evil Empire” (Disney+).

As the first of many, many, many Star Wars films in the franchise, A New Hope stands to be one of the very best Star Wars films out there. As one of the first sci-fi fantasy ‘hero’s journey’ movies, A New Hope has so many quotable moments that carry through to the rest of the Star Wars franchise.

“But I was going into Tosche Station to pick up some power converters!” — Luke Skywalker

“Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You’re my only hope.” — Leia Organa

“I find your lack of faith disturbing.” — Darth Vader

“These aren’t the droids you’re looking for.” — Obi-Wan Kenobi

“I’ve got a bad feeling about this.” — Han Solo

“May the force be with you.” — General Jan Dodonna

Star Wars: A New Hope and more Star Wars films are all currently streaming on Disney+

JAWS

“A giant great white shark arrives on the shores of a New England beach resort and wreaks havoc with bloody attacks on swimmers until a part-time sheriff shows up with a marine biologist and an old seafarer to hunt the monster down” (Amazon Prime Video).

Do I even have to explain? We all know the famous line from this Steven Spielberg film.

“You’re gonna need a bigger boat” — Chief Martin Brody

Jaws is currently streaming on Starz subscription service.

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING

“A chosen hobbit and his loyal friends join a wizard, an elf, a dwarf and two humans on a quest to destroy a powerful ring and defeat an evil lord” (HBO Max).

My favorite movie trilogy, The Lord of the Rings, is one of the most quotable movies there is. To be fair, many of those quotes do come from the actual book itself, written by Tolkien, but because we’re focusing on movies right now, let’s just ignore the book-to-script debate. Between Frodo, Gandalf, Samwise, and Aragorn, and basically every character, iconic quotes happen left and right in these movies.

“You cannot pass! I am a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the Flame of Anor. The dark fire will not avail you, Flame of Udun! Go back to the shadow. You shall not pass!” — Gandalf

“I made a promise, Mr Frodo. A promise. “Don’t you leave him Samwise Gamgee.” And I don’t mean to. I don’t mean to.” — Samwise Gamgee

“One does not simply walk into Mordor.” — Boromir

“I do not know what strength is in my blood, but I swear to you I will not let the White City fall, nor our people fail.” — Aragorn

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and the other films in this trilogy are currently all streaming on HBO Max.

THE PRINCESS BRIDE

“A man regales his ailing grandson with a tale of romance and adventure in a lighthearted fairy tale” (Disney+).

One of the most iconic love stories to ever cross our screen. Based on the 1973 book written by William Goldman, The Princess Bride is a movie for all of the romantic souls who believe in true love. And of course, that Inigo Montoya is the best swordsman out there.

“Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.” — Inigo Montoya

“Inconceivable!” — Vizzini

“As you wish.” — Westley

“Have fun storming the castle!” — Miracle Max

The Princess Bride is currently streaming on Hulu and Disney+

Enjoy watching, and keep on memorizing those movie quotes!
