It’s no surprise that Adult Swim’s hit show Rick and Morty was a focal point this year at San Diego Comic Con. With it’s presence came a huge announcement, as well as interactive fun outside the convention center. Whether fans were elated or annoyed, the cast and crew brought a whole lot of wubba lubba dub dub to the audience.

During the Rick and Morty  Season 8 panel, actor Keith David made a surprise appearance. David is known in the show as the voice of popular character President Andre Curtis, who first appeared in the 2015 episode “Get Schwifty”. Creators then announced that a new spinoff series is in the works, titled President Curtis. David’s former co-stars Stephanie Beatriz and Jim Rash are also set to make appearances in the show.

While the show title is swift and too the point, we can look forward to some schwifty antics among Curtis and his White House staff. According to Keith David via IGN, “Now he’s got some really great adventures. Some in the White House…some related to the White House”.  As fans know the character to be strong and forthcoming, these adventures are sure to be just as crazy as those of Rick and Morty.

President Curtis is the third spinoff show from the Rick and Morty franchise, following Vindicators 2 and Rick and Morty: The Anime. What does this mean for the future of Rick and Morty itself? We can’t be too sure, but it’s likely there will be a lot of references to it in President Curtis. And while it wasn’t officially stated, we can expect a crossover episode or two.

Unfortunately, we didn’t get a peak at a clip for the new show as only a promotional image was released. But still, the intensity of the photo reveals the headstrong attitude and comedic relief that’s in store. Adult Swim has not yet slated a release date for President Curtis

While most fans have expressed excitement about the spinoff, others are not as convinced that it will be a success. On the Rick and Morty Instagram, user azurinthe states, “please do not do this. nobody is going to watch this. another fail like the anime.” And they’re not the only one with such complaints. It’s no surprise that Rick and Morty: The Anime didn’t fare well with viewers, with a 50% Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and an astounding 17% Popcornmeter rating.

Other users beg Adult Swim to pick up the cancelled Netflix series Inside Job rather than committing to the Curtis spinoff. Inside Job was cancelled after just one season in 2023, despite being a hit, and fans have been advocating for Adult Swim to revive it ever since. While there may have been hope before, Adult Swim appears to be more interested in furthering its current franchises than adding something new to its lineup.

For those who couldn’t attend the convention or get into the panel, there were still Rick and Morty activities to partake in outside the convention center. The most notable of these was the table read for Rick and Morty and Smiling Friends. Fans flocked to the tables where actors read live scripts, including Ian Cardoni, Harry Belden, and Spencer Grammer, even without a badge.

Another was Adult Swim’s Pirate Purrrty on the Green, featuring interactive fun activities with a theme for various shows. Naturally, the Rick and Morty feature was as raunchy as it could get without being NSFW. Who can resist a bounce house? No one? What if I told you it was full of butts from the Buttworld in the show? That certainly didn’t deter fans from jumping to their heart’s content and bouncing off the butts at full force. I can’t think of a better way to reference the show during this event and wrap up the show for fans.

San Diego said goodbye to yet another successful convention in 2025. But we’re always looking forward to the next show! If you were able to attend the con, let us know what you thought and your hopes for 2026!
