SDCC saw things get spooky as stars from the hit comedy show Ghosts treated fans to some sneak peeks of what’s coming up in season five. Devan Chandler Long (Thorfinn), Asher Grodman (Trevor), Danielle Pinnock (Alberta), Punam Patel (Bela) and Utkarsh Ambudkar (Jay) were joined by producer and show runner Joe Wiseman for the panel.

Season five will premiere on 16th October on CBS, and the fans were treated to both a new poster and a teaser trailer, as well as a few hints about what will be happening at Woodstone.

With season four ending with Jay selling his soul to the devil in order to make the restaurant a success, season five will kick off with Jay’s sister Bela coming to work in the restaurant and starting her own events business. Consequently, fans will be seeing much more of Bela in the new season, and Joe Wiseman also revealed that Bela will be forming some sort of relationship with one of the ghosts – and it’s not going to be Trevor this time.

There was also some talk from Joe Wiseman about “one of the last big mysteries” from the show being solved – that of Sassappis’ death. Unlike some of the other characters, who have very obvious visual clues as to how they met their end, the way that Sassappis came to be haunting Woodstone has so far been left unexplained.

The cast spoke about having another two seasons to play around with the spooky stories before the show ends.

“It’s such an amazing concept for a show,” said Asher Grodman. “We get to do these really exciting, original stories because of what this concept allows us to do, and to have two seasons of a runway to start playing and being really bold – that’s a lot of pressure on Joe Wiseman!”

Joe Wiseman confirmed that there was going to be a Halloween episode, with the mummy who featured in last year’s episode playing a much bigger role this time. He also revealed that fan-favourite Patience will be back, and that we will get to meet the mysterious “Others” she spoke about.

Danielle Pinnock hinted at some of Alberta’s upcoming romantic storylines. “Something I’m really excited for is for Alberta to enter her soft-girl era,” she laughed.

Speaking about Bela playing a bigger role in the upcoming season, Utkarsh Ambudkar said, “As you guys know, Jay cannot see the ghosts so unfortunately I don’t actually get to work with any of my co-stars. We’re in the same room but we don’t get to interact at all, so when Punam (Patel who plays Bela) comes, it’s like this wonderful oasis in a desert of loneliness. Her and I get to spend time together and be human beings together, so I really enjoy that.”

Also teased was that Trevor’s daughter will be coming to work in the restaurant with Bela, which will allow some development of Trevor’s character.

Asked how things will play out now that Jay has sold his soul to the devil, Utkarsh Ambudkar said:

“I think it’ll be another exciting adventure for the ghosts and Sam and Jay to go on. I love when we all, as a family, work together against a common foe, when we’re not in-fighting or creating tension with one another. I love when the whole team has a goal, and we’re now united as a team against Elias to save Jay’s soul… and working towards hopefully me staying alive.”

To find out if the ghosts can save Jay’s soul, you’ll have to wait until the new season airs on CBS on 16th October.
