Superman & Lois ends its 4-year run this year and it’s shaping up to be one epic goodbye. From fighting the Eradicator and Bizarro to a Cancer diagnosis and teenage drug dealing, Superman and Lois deal with it all.

The show is more about the Kents and their relationships with their friends and family, than the superheroics of the Man of Steel. Though there are plenty of scenes with Tyler Hoechlin, Superman, in costume and flying.

What’s It About?

Superman & Lois begins with the Kents moving into the Kent Family Farm in Smallville. Both Clark and Lois have been fired from the Daily Planet and Clark’s mom recently died. Clark, Tyler Hoechlin, and Lois, Elizabeth Tulloch, are also now parents to two teenage boys. Jonathon, played by Jordan Elsass in the first two seasons and later by Michael Bishop, and Jordan, Alexander Garfin have no idea their dad is Superman.

It’s important to note that at this point the show might still be set in the Arrowverse, but that changes at the end of season 2. General Lane comments about Superman being the only superhero on Earth confirming that this show is in a separate universe from the Arrowverse.

The show follows the Kents as they attempt to live a normal life in Smallville while keeping the biggest secret in the world. Clark is Superman.

Lois gets a job at the local Newspaper and Clark gets a job as the High School Football coach while still saving the world. Because the show is mainly set in Smallville we get to catch up with Clark’s childhood friend Lana Lang.

The Characters

Aside from the Kents there we also follow Lana Lang and her family, Chrissy the editor of the local newspaper, and General Lane, Lois’ father.

Lana Lang and Family

Lana is married with a family of her own. She has two daughters with her husband Kyle Cushing, Sarah who is the same age as the Kent boys, and Sophie who is 8.

The Cushings at first appear to be the perfect family, but we quickly see that’s not the case. Sarah suffers from depression and is just barely on the other side of attempting suicide.

The Kents and Cushings have been friends for years, though their children haven’t seen each other in years. Jordan and Sarah almost immediately begin to trauma bond becoming romantic interests early on.

Chrissy

Oh, Chrissy. Chrissy is full of anxiety and an absolute neurotic mess. She worships the ground Lois walks on and is incredibly intimidated by her.

Chrissy is not the most confident person at the beginning of the show but her journey is an incredible one. She takes on the role of an endangered journalist since Superman always saves Lois Lane. But her character evolves through these dangers.

We do see her gain some self-confidence when she stands up to Lois for not being the hero journalist Chrissy thought she was. We also see Lois and Chrissy become amazing friends.

General Lane

Lois’ father General Lane plays a prominent role in this series. Now nearing retirement Sam starts to reflect on how he raised Lois and her sister Lucy and vows to be a bigger part of his grandsons’ lives.

Sam knows Clark is Superman and even offers to train Jordan when his powers manifest. Lois forbids this but Sam is a grandpa and trains him anyway.

General Lane connects Superman and therefore the rest of the characters to the outside world. He’s in charge of the Department of Defense where he can best use Superman to the government’s and the world’s advantage and keep his secret.

Jonathon and Jordan Kent

The Kent boys are about as opposite each other as siblings can get. Jonathon is the popular school jock who just seems to know exactly how to act in every social situation.

Jordan, however, is quiet, awkward, a social outcast, and suffers from depression and anxiety. As brothers, they are fiercely loyal to each other, even when they’re angry with each other. Their family is everything and so are their friends.

Jordan is the only one at first to get powers making Jonathon jealous. However, the two quickly learn to overcome this and become closer than ever.

Why We’re Watching

Superman & Lois is a family show. Not a show for the family but a show about family. The Kents and the Cushings aren’t just friends but their family.

During Sarah’s quinceañera, Sarah learns a secret about her father that breaks her family apart. But from that are some amazing moments where Lana finds her independence and runs for Mayor, Sarah stands up to Jordan’s stalking, and Kyle and Sarah rebuild their relationship as father and daughter.

General Lane and Lois explore their own father-and-daughter relationship showing the importance of accountability and the power of forgiveness.

Superman himself struggles with fighting his own half-brother Tal-Rho who is envious of Superman’s life and wants to see him eradicated and bring about Krypton on Earth.

The show goes deeper than both Lois and Clark The New Adventures of Superman and Smallville. The show explores real family dynamics and struggles, focusing on these relationships over the superhero antics of the title hero.

There is plenty of action though, it is a Superman show after all, but at the heart of it is a family drama about two parents trying to raise their sons and keep them safe.

This is why we can’t wait to see how the Kents handle a Luthor bent on revenge against Lois sick with cancer and Superman defeated by Doomsday. We may not be excited for the show to end but we can’t wait to see how it all turns out!

Superman & Lois airs Monday nights at 5 pm PT/8 pm ET on the CW.
