This past Tuesday, April 2nd, Grey’s Anatomy was renewed for its twenty-first season. The announcement brought a wave of excitement among long-time Grey’s watchers. But it also sparked some less-than-enthused reactions. Many have questioned whether another season is necessary, citing the dwindling number of original characters left on the show. Others have questioned why Grey’s gets to continue while its sister show, Station 19, faces its final season.
The news came on the back of the continued push to save Station 19, the firefighter drama set in the same universe as Grey’s. ABC announced Station 19′s cancelation back in December of 2023. The news sparked protests and petitions from fans that have continued until now, even as the final season airs.
What is it about Grey’s Anatomy that keeps it running while Station 19 does not? And is there a point when a show has been going on for too long?
Why Was Station 19 Canceled?
There is no conclusive reason as to why Station 19 was canceled. The show consistently garnered high viewership and held the title of ABC’s “No. 2 drama series.” One possible reason is budget. These types of shows can be very expensive to produce and some sources said that the network wanted to allocate more funds to the production of other shows like reality television.
Executives reportedly also felt that the show was due to end. Filling Station 19’s coveted Thursday night spot will be 9-1-1, another firefighter show previously housed by Fox. The news came as a shock to showrunners, cast, and fans alike.
Fans Are Fighting to Save Station 19
Despite the show’s cancelation late last year, fans continue to fight for its place on screen. Petitions continue to circulate on social media even as the final season’s fifth episode approaches. So why are the fans so invested in saving Station 19?
Not only is Station 19 filled with action-packed rescue missions and inspiring comradery, but it also tackles some hard-hitting topics. Previous seasons have covered everything from the pitfalls of the foster care system to addiction and homophobia. The show features more than one openly LGBTQ+ character and couple. It even won an award for its discussion of systemic racism in previous seasons. Fans want Station 19 to stay for the love of the story, as well as the representation it provides.
Do We Need More Grey’s Anatomy?
As one side laments the loss of a favorite show, another rejoices at the prospect of yet another season. Or at least some do. Grey’s Anatomy’s renewal has received mixed reactions. Many have stuck with the show through its many eras since season one. Others have lost their enthusiasm for it.
Most of the show’s original cast has long since left the show. Only two such characters are left: Miranda Bailey, played by Chandra Wilson, and Richard Webber, played by James Pickens Jr. Even Ellen Pompeo’s pivotal character, Meredith Grey, is no longer a mainstay. The actress has taken a step back from the series after a record number of seasons, though she still makes some appearances.
Though an older — but not original — cast member, Jessica Capshaw, made a reappearance on April 4th’s episode as Arizona Robbins, sporadic guest appearances may not be enough. The show’s tone has changed over the years, as is to be expected. However, many miss the dynamics of the first group of interns, as well as that of the characters that joined halfway through the show’s run, and dislike the constant shifting of cast members.
What Now?
There’s also the age-old question of when a show should end. How much more story is there to tell in Grey’s Anatomy and will the quality of the storytelling suffer the longer it drags on? Executives may have noted that Station 19 had run its course, but it seems that the show was still in its prime. Grey’s Anatomy has also covered important topics throughout its seasons, much like Station 19. Station 19 does the same while still maintaining the majority of its original cast and bringing fresh storylines.
Though fans continue to fight for the show, it doesn’t seem like Station 19’s fate will change anytime soon. As season seven continues, viewers will prepare to say goodbye to the loveable group of firefighters. Meanwhile, time will tell if Grey’s Anatomy’s twenty-first season will live up to expectations and if the network made the right choice.
