Netflix just released the Young Royals season three trailer, and it looks like new scandals are on the horizon for everyone. The final season of the beloved teen drama is set to premiere in March 2024.
Simon and Wilhelm
Season three picks up after Wilhelm’s turning point speech at Hillerska, in last season’s final episode. The world knows about Simon and Wilhelm’s relationship and while the need to hide is gone, they’ll have to deal with maintaining their relationship in the limelight. We can assume that all the attention will put pressure on the pair, both as a couple and as individuals. Wilhelm looks to be straying further away from the royal family’s traditions. Simon will have to deal with his newfound ties to those very traditions and how his actions reflect on Wilhelm’s family.
It is clear from the trailer that neither Wilhelm nor Simon wants to deal with living under the control of the monarchy for the rest of their lives. They want to feel normal. Only time will tell if they’ll be able to achieve this dream. However, despite the newfound pressure from outside forces, Simon and Wilhelm seem to be in the best place yet regarding their personal feelings. Wilhelm’s revealing speech was a sign to Simon that he was willing to put aside his reputation if it meant they could be together. The two are at a point where they no longer care what everyone else thinks. This sets a strong foundation for them to weather the storm together in season three.
What About the Others?
Meanwhile, back at Hillerska, there’s an investigation underway that will threaten the fate of the school. Sara struggles to handle the fallout of her and August’s relationship while August contends with his place in the monarchy. And Wilhelm’s return to the school will only shake things up more.
Speaking of Sara, her character’s arc in season two sets her up for some great potential storylines in the coming season. Sara struggled with belonging since season one, leading her to make some questionable choices in season two. She unexpectedly fell in love with August because he provided a sense of love and understanding that she craved. When this came out, both her brother Wilhelm and her friend Felice cut Sara off.
Sara’s betrayal puts her in a hard place going into season three with no one left on her side. Not only that but in a last-ditch attempt to make things right, Sara makes a call to the police. We can assume she is reporting August. While this may seem like a possible redemption in the making, it could backfire. Simon already decided not to go to the police because his father’s name was on the pill bottle and the investigation would undoubtedly link back to him.
While Sara has some clear storylines set up, Felice is more of a wild card. It will be interesting to see how big of a role her character will play in the final season. She’ll have to deal with the fallout of her friendship with Sara, especially since she refused to room with her anymore after finding out about her connection to August.
Felice also has an interesting past with Wilhelm. The two once found themselves in an almost relationship that only Felice was truly invested in. A scene from the recent trailer shows Felice happily announcing that Wilhelm will be returning to school. This indicates that there’s no bad blood between the two but how their relationship will progress is still up in the air. It would be nice to see the friendship between the two come back in full swing despite their past and to see Felice discover her self-worth.
Looking Forward to Young Royals Season Three
Season two focused on obstacles for the whole cast of characters. It doesn’t look like they’re in for smooth sailing just yet, but fans can hope for more happy moments amid the bad. Despite the angst that the Young Royals season three trailer forecasts, the celebration of love and rebellion at the heart of the story seems to be intact. Plenty of heartwarming scenes in the recent trailer offer hope for a happy ending.
