CBS’s Ghosts returns! The comedy’s third season will premiere Thursday, February 15 at 8:30 PM ET. Instead of the usual 18 episodes, Season 3 will have just 10, due to the joint strikes that took place in 2023. At the height of those strikes last summer, it seemed like we would never get back to Woodstone Mansion—but at last, that day has almost arrived.
Ghosts’ first season began in the fall of 2021, and it was an instant fan-favorite. Based on the U.K. show of the same name, it follows a young married couple, Samantha (Rose McIver) and Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar), after they inherit a mansion in upstate New York from Sam’s late aunt. Sam and Jay move away from their home in New York City to restore the mansion and turn it into a bed and breakfast. After falling down a flight of stairs shortly after their arrival, though, Sam nearly dies—and when she returns to the mansion fully recovered, she can now see the ghosts that inhabit the property.
The Woodstone Mansion ghosts are an eclectic, friendly, hilarious crew of dead men and women who passed away on the mansion’s property, and are now bound to it for the rest of their existence. From a Native American to a Viking, and a flower child to a Victorian lady, the ghosts appear exactly as they did at their time of death. Pete, the Pinecone Trooper leader with an arrow through his neck, and Trevor, the partying stockbroker with no pants, are those most affected by this peculiarity. It is nearly impossible to choose a favorite from the crew of ghosts—but Captain Isaac Higgintoot (Brandon Scott Jones), a Revolutionary War officer, has my heart. Anytime someone mentions Hamilton to me in real life, I can’t resist quoting Isaac: “I’m sorry, you’re talking about Alexander Hamilton? Did that little twerp become famous?!”
While Sam can see and interact with the ghosts, Jay cannot. This does not, however, hinder Jay’s relationship with them. With Sam as a go-between, he and Pete have become Dungeons & Dragons besties. And of course, Sam updates Jay on all the ghostly drama and fun that goes on “behind-the-veil.” (Do we still refer to couples as #goals? If so, then Sam and Jay are absolutely #goals.)
Ghosts is not just a comedy; it is a heartwarming, emotional show that showcases the power of friendship. Some of the ghosts have lived together in Woodstone for hundreds of years. In that time, they have become more than roommates and best friends. Now, they are family. They are protective of their fellow dead, yet also extremely protective of “their livings,” as they refer to Sam and Jay. Ghosts is definitely a show the whole family can watch, excellent in its portrayal of love, acceptance, and positive relationships.
When we last visited Woodstone Mansion, we were left with a burning question: Which member of the ghostly crew has passed on? Sam and Jay were sitting in their car just out of the bounds of their property, having a quiet date night, when Sam saw an ethereal light pierce the mansion’s roof. This light can only mean one thing—a ghostly person has moved on from the earthly plane. As much as I would love for one of the ghosts to reach heaven, I don’t want to lose anyone! Fingers crossed that it was one of the attic or cellar ghosts, and not a member of the first-floor crew.
February 15 can’t come soon enough. As Isaac would say: Huzzah!
