In 1997, Jemerey Page and Vicki Stolnick produced the Film Jack Frost a movie about the serial killer Jack Frost coming back to life as a killer snowman who goes on a murder spree to get revenge on the man who sent him to be executed. Jack Frost is one of those horror movie films that do not take themselves too seriously. This is one of those fringe horror classics that you will either love or hate. Everything about this movie is campy. If you do not like over-the-top campy movies this will not be for you.

Jack Frost (Scott Mcdonlad) gets into a car accident and somehow the chemicals from the car and the snow transform him into a snowman who is bent on revenge against Sheriff Sam and his family. This general plot of the film had potential but the execution of the plot in the film falls short. One of the key things that detracts from the film at the beginning is the flashbacks that show how Sam caught Jack Frost and his threat against his family. It would have more impact if we had seen the treats as they were happening instead of Sam flashing back to them. The film uses flashbacks to foreshadow the coming of Jack Frost but it fails to convey the gravity of the situation and comes off as cheesy.

Sam returns to work and is informed that someone has died and the first thing we see is a man frozen solid. He sees the man frozen solid and starts to suspect that Jack Frost could be behind the killings.

Sam asks if Jack Frost is dead to which the FBI agent replies yes. To no one’s surprise, he is lying through his teeth and it turns out that some experimental acid transformed Jack Frost into a killer Snowman. The FBI is happy the acid works but is now setting out to capture Jack Frost to prevent him from killing any more people.

While this is happening Tyler Sam’s son is playing with Jack Frost who suddenly appears on his front lawn when the neighborhood bullies show up and knock Jack Frost’s head off his body. Then Jack Frost’s head smiles and causes the bully’s sled to fall and decipate the bully in front of Tyler.

This is the typical 90’s monster kills bully for messing with it scene. It would normally provide the audience with carthisis by allowing them to see the bully get his just deserts but there is not enough build-up in this scene. It does show us that the snowman is alive and that Tyler is in a lot of danger. There is no build-up or suspense to any of the scenes in the movie.

The movie proceeds from here to show the brutal and creative series of murders that Jack Frost commits which are often so unrealistic to be laughable. For instance, in one scene Jack Frost the snowman kills a police officer by running him over with his car smiling.

In the next murder scene, he kills a man with an icicle that he shoots from his hand and has already at least frozen one person to death. Keeping this in mind a snowman running over a police officer with a car just seems silly. After he murders the guy with an icicle he proceeds to rape to death or brutally murder his girlfriend.

Frost attacks the girl in the shower and it is very sexual and over the top. The girl is screaming for help as Jack Frost is slamming and thrusting himself against her. He finally kills her and then his nose returns to his face. Frost then says, “I hope it was as good for you as it was for me.” The whole scene seems unnecessarily rapey to me. After a few more murders there is a showdown between Sam and Frost which leads to the town teaming up and defeating Frost. The movie was hardly scary but if you want a cheesy horror film for the holiday season then Jack Frost is for you. Otherwise, give it a hard pass.
