Last week, I talked about five of my favorite horror movies I watched this year! Today I want to share the rest of the list to round out my top ten.

This week, we have cannibal families, bloodthirsty grannies, and an evil carousel unicorn on a rampage! Let’s get started:

#6 AUNTIE LEE’S MEAT PIES (1992)

Source: Steiner Films

A satanic matriarch uses her beautiful daughters to lure unsuspecting men to their home, where they dispatch them and use the ground-up parts in their famous meat pies!

This black comedy is like Sweeney Todd meets horror classic Motel Hell. In fact, the astute horror fan will recognize the house in this movie as the exact same one in Motel Hell! With a fabulous cast including Karen Black, Michael Berryman, and Pat Morita, this arthouse cannibal flick is sure to satisfy even the hungriest of horror fans!

#7 CAROUSHELL (2016)

Source: Silver Spotlight Films

In the realm of possessed inanimate objects, perhaps none reign more supreme than Duke, the wisecracking carousel unicorn from CarousHELL (2016).

Steve Rudzinski’s horror comedy follows Duke as he breaks free from his carousel prison and embarks on a journey of revenge against humanity for its years of petty torments. CarousHELL is hilarious from start to finish, delighting with low-budget charm, a clever script, and a committed cast unafraid to get down and dirty with a wooden unicorn.

#8 RABID GRANNIES (1988)

Source: Troma Entertainment

When two elderly aunties invite their family to their birthday celebration, they are surprised with a gift from their estranged, devil-worshiping nephew. The gift unleashes a force that possesses the old ladies, and they proceed to terrorize their greedy family members!

Troma Entertainment distributed this bizarre and rollicking jaunt that’s Evil Dead grandmas chasing people around a mansion. But they haven’t totally lost their matronly instincts. As the tagline declares: “They love their grandchildren . . . well done!”

#9 NOCEBO (2022)

Source: Shudder

Wealthy fashion designer Christine (Eva Green) gets bitten by a tick and becomes so incapacitated that she accepts the help of a mysterious caregiver from the Philippines named Diana (Chai Fonacier). Diana uses powerful homemade remedies to ease Christine’s symptoms, but there is something more insidious going on.

With its seamless, inventive storytelling and fantastic performances from the entire cast, Nocebo is a powerfully emotional tale that interweaves Filipino folklore with a scathing indictment of labor exploitation.

10) FADE TO BLACK (1980)

Source: American Cinema Productions

An awkward, insufferable cinephile (Dennis Christopher) spends his days working at a warehouse and his nights watching movies at home. After suffering years of relentless bullying from family and friends (including a young Mickey Rourke!), he snaps and begins exacting violent vengeance while dressed up like The Mummy, Dracula, and other famous movie characters.

Unfortunately overshadowed by classics like The Shining, Friday the 13th, and The Fog released the same year, Fade to Black deserves a place in the echelon of horror royalty. It has a solid script, and Dennis Christopher’s performance is intensely captivating.

That’s all for this year! I hope you discovered something new and exciting reading through this list. Let me know if any of your favorites made the cut, and make sure to check out other Halloween-related content at The Game of Nerds!
