If you are a fan of Anime, you have definitely watched MAPPA animation studio’s shows before. This year however, MAPPA has been pumping out some of these best animations the Anime industry has to offer. Not only does MAPPA create some of the best stories, but the actual animation techniques used by MAPPA are years ahead of their competition – meaning their Anime looks really good, futuristic almost. This article will go over all of the Anime that MAPPA has released in 2023, and not so coincidentally, it will be a list of some of the best Anime of 2023. Starting in chronological order from the beginning of 2023 until now, let’s get started!

  1. Chainsaw Man (Fall 2022 in Japan, Winter 2023 in the U.S.):
Backed by popular demand and MAPPA, one of the most successful Mangas of all time in Chainsaw Man becomes an Anime. Once released in the U.S., Chainsaw Man quickly became the most popular Anime on the market with a rating of 8.55 stars out of 10 with over 1.3 million reviews. Likely the only reason it did not garner a higher rating than that is because it was only 12 episodes and did not get into the fans’ favorite part of the story, which will likely happen next happen in season 2. Chainsaw Man season 2 is planned to be released sometime in 2024, and season 1 is currently available on Crunchyroll.
  2. Vinland Saga Season 2 (Winter 2023 in Japan and U.S.):
Unlike many other Anime that take place in Japan or another planet completely, Vinland Saga is a story stemming from 10th and 11th-century Nordic history. This difference is part of what makes this Anime so good, but what makes it truly great is the character development and storytelling used throughout both seasons 1 and 2. This sentiment reigns true with the fans, giving Vinland Saga Season 2 an 8.82 rating out of 10 with over 500k reviews. Both seasons have 24 episodes each, but the stark contrast in story pacing between the seasons could be a reason why the rating is not higher.  There will be a third season of Vinland Saga, but it likely will not be released until 2025. Vinland Saga is available on Netflix and Crunchyroll.
  3. Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill (Winter 2023 in Japan and U.S.):
Following the popular Anime industry trend of Isekai (a person from Earth is transported to another world), this Anime is spin off of that trend. While it is the least popular Anime of this list, it performed well compared to most Anime due to the reputation that MAPPA has built for their productions, coming in at a 7.68 rating out of 10 with over 180k reviews. Despite performing the worst on this list, this Anime will have season 2 coming out in February 2024. It is available on Crunchyroll and for purchase on Amazon Video.
  4. Hell’s Paradise (Spring 2023 in Japan, early Summer in the U.S.):
Based on an ancient Japanese myth, Hell’s Paradise embraces the supernatural element that Anime fans love. It quickly became one of the most popular shows on Anime streaming services during it release in Spring. Its rating comes in at 8.15 out of 10 with nearly 570k reviews, which probably would be higher if the last episode of the season did not end in what many would consider an unfinished way – one of the only storytelling blunders that MAPPA has made recently. Hell’s Paradise will have a season 2, but it will likely not be released until 2024 or 2025. Nothing has been confirmed yet. It is available on Crunchyroll and Funimation.
  5. Jujutsu Kaisen 2nd Season: Shibuya Incident (Currently airing in Japan and the U.S.):
This season of Jujutsu Kaisen is probably the most anticipated release of all of 2023, expanding on the immensely popular first season. Despite not even being fully released, it already has a rating of 8.82 out of 10 with nearly 600k reviews. However, this is no surprise when considering the first season has a slightly lower rating but over 2.3 million total reviews. Jujutsu Kaisen is one of MAPPA’s major claims to fame, really cementing them as one of the Anime industry’s best production studios. There is no news on the third season because the second season is still being released. Jujutsu Kaisen is available on Crunchyroll, Funimation, HBO Max, and Netflix.
  6. Attack on Titan: The Final Season, Part 2 (Winter 2022 in Japan, not in the U.S. yet):
The Attack on Titan series is MAPPA’s biggest claim to fame, as it is one of the most story-intensive and action-packed Anime series out there. This final season is being broken into three parts, and part two was expected to be released in Spring 2023 but has been delayed for the U.S. outside of a one-hour special that was released in April 2023. Despite these complications, the hype for this release is still at an all-time high, with that lone one-hour episode garnering an 8.77 rating out of 10 with nearly 1.2 million reviews. Not a surprise, considering the other seasons have even higher ratings with even more reviews. Attack On Titan is available on Crunchyroll, Funimation, HBO Max, and Netflix – Part 2 is expected on these platforms before the end of the year.

MAPPA has also released a couple of animated Movies this year, but none have been released in the U.S. and will therefore remain unnamed. Between 6 and 10 releases are about the average amount of releases for MAPPA, so 2023 is within the average for them in that regard. However, the quality and corresponding ratings of MAPPA’s Anime releases this year have been the best of any other year for them, making 2023 the year of MAPPA for the Anime industry. All ratings listed above are taken from MyAnimeList, and are almost exclusively U.S.-based ratings.
