American Thanksgiving has come and gone, so it is almost time to ring in the new year! This is when most people like to reflect on the year. However, I am more interested in looking back on video games of years past. So, we are going to take a look at the top video games of 2022.

The Game of the Year Awards
I do not consider myself an expert in choosing the top video games, especially in broad terms. I enjoy a variety of genres ranging from life sims to survival RPGs. However, there is a qualified team, and that is the jury of the Game of the Year Awards (GotYA). The GotYA combines a jury of over 100 entities worldwide to vote on the top games in several categories. This is a blended vote in which 90% accounts for the jury, and 10% is public fan voting. If you want in on the action, voting ends on December 7, 2022. The GotYA will be streamed on December 8, 2022. More information will be provided in the link below. With this mentioned, the games I believe should be at the top are as follows.
Top Big-Name Titles
The titles in both categories were chosen based on three criteria. My experiences, those close to me, and the buzz I have seen online. The “best” video game is highly subjective, and I am curious to see how your lists differ from mine!
Title | Release Date | System(s) |
God of War Ragnarök | November 9, 2022 | PS 4 / 5 |
Horizon Forbidden West | February 18, 2022 | PS 4 / 5 |
Elden Ring | February 25, 2022 | PS 4 / 5, Windows, Xbox One / X / S |
Kirby and the Forgotten Land | March 25, 2022 | Nintendo Switch |
Bayonetta 3 | October 28, 2022 | Nintendo Switch |
Top Indie Titles
Now, I could not write an article and skip over the indie games! So, while there are many games I wanted to include on this list, I kept it to five.
Title | Release Date | System(s) |
Cult of the Lamb | August 11, 2022 | PS 4 / 5, Windows, MacOs, Xbox One / X / S, Nintendo Switch |
Stray | July 19, 2022 | PS 4 / 5, Windows |
Tunic | July 19, 2022 | PS 4 / 5, Windows, MacOs, Xbox One / X / S, Nintendo Switch |
Nobody Saves the World | January 18, 2022 | PS 4 / 5, Windows, Xbox One / X / S, Nintendo Switch |
OlliOlli World | February 7, 2022 | PS 4 / 5, Windows, Xbox One / X / S, Nintendo Switch |
Thoughts, Odds & Ends
Overall, I feel that this is a fair list. I tried to ensure I did not include any titles in early access. That was a tough one for me! I am curious to hear what everyone thinks deserves to be called the best video game of 2022. In the end, if you are interested in voting in the GotYA, head over to their website.
