While the original release date for the film was in May 2022, fans are definitely going to have to wait a bit longer.

Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor are in charge of writing the script and obviously want to ensure they do the film justice. The first Legally Blonde premiered in 2001 and grossed a total of $141.7 million for its release. It starred Reese Witherspoon, Luke Wilson, Selma Blair, Jennifer Coolidge, and many others. Since then, there has been a sequel (Legally Blonde 2: Red, White, and Blonde), a Broadway musical, and a straight-to-home movie called Legally Blondes. There’s certainly a reputation to uphold there, and Kaling doesn’t want to disappoint anyone. In an interview with Time, she said, “We don’t want to be responsible for ruining what is basically Reese’s Avenger franchise.”

We have gotten some information on the movie, though. First, we know that Elle Woods will be in her 40s in the film, which is quite different from the 21-year-old we saw in the first movie. Also, Jennifer Coolidge will return for her role as Paulette. Witherspoon has also entertained the idea of more characters also returning, but none of them have been confirmed.
