Cosplay jumped onto The Game of Nerds’ radar two years ago when Masked Mateo joined our team. He’s the reason why we have an amazing cosplay team and presence at conventions. It only seems right that be our first cosplayer feature! We want to start making Thursdays all about Cosplays! So let’s learn some more about Masked Mateo!

What got you into cosplay?

What got me into cosplay was just waking up and wanting to do it. Ever since then, I’ve loved every moment.

What cosplays have you done so far?

Deadpool, Dawn of Justice Robin, Nightwing.

What has been your favorite cosplay so far?

Nightwing is definitely my favorite.

Give us a current breakdown of your amazing cosplay! Who makes your suit? Accessories?

My suit was made by Gaslight Costuming and Replicas using Parallel Life Studios fabrics. The mask and emblem are from Tiger Stone FX. I made the escrima sticks using PVC pipes and electrical tape.

What is your occupation outside of cosplay?

I am a former fighter and current Recruiter.

Why do YOU (personally) continue to cosplay?

It’s just my fandom. Love bringing joy to others, especially when I come off as the live version of their favorite superhero.

What is your favorite convention to cosplay at?

Fan Expo Dallas because it is my hometown convention. I also love DragonCon and MegaCon.

How much time do you spend on your cosplay per week?

A couple hours to minutes. I always make sure everything is looking top notch to my standards.

What has been your best cosplay experience?

My best Cosplay experience was taking on the mantle of Nightwing and the insane amount of support I’ve gotten since then. I’ve been featured on some notable pages and websites. I was cosplayer of the month for the Dallas Fan Expo. I’ve also been featured on the official DC Fandome website.

What’s the worst cosplay experience you’ve had?

The worst would be, you know what, I don’t think I’ve really had one yet. haha

What’s your best advice you have for new cosplayers?

Just have fun with it. There is no right or wrong way to do Cosplay. Cosplayers come in all shapes and sizes, ethnicities, genders, and nationalities.
