Much to my reader/writer heart’s dismay, my kids are not readers or writers. Therefore trying to get them to read anything is a feat. Them enjoying a book is phenomenal. I see you looking at my parents. I read to them. I told them made up stories. However they just never got into it. Unfortunately for my kids at least with staying home all the time right now, I am getting them to read a page or two a day at least. Sometimes they get into the book and end up reading more. Well, until they catch themselves, that is. Here are several books (I am giving to the title to the first book in the series where it applies) they have enjoyed in the past that maybe your kids would enjoy too. Even if begrudgingly.
Shiloh is the first book in the Shiloh Quartet. My son has only read the first one. It is penned by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. The book follows Marty who finds a dog, Shiloh, and absolutely loves him right away. Marty finds out that Shiloh belongs to another person but that person abuses poor Shiloh. Marty must navigate right and wrong to do what is right and best for Shiloh.
The One And Only Ivan by Kathrine Applegate is a book about a gorilla who lived right here in the Pacific Northwest. Tacoma Washington to be exact. Same as me. In any case, it is written from Ivan’s point of view. Where he lives, what he misses or doesn’t miss about his first home, his art and a newcomer to the family. Everything changes.
The Sword Of Summer from the Gods of Asgard series by Rick Riordan. It is the first book in the series. Rick Riordan is the same author who brought us, Percy Jackson. It is about a kid, Magnus Chase, who has been living on the streets after his mother told him to run. He is found and caught by his Uncle Randolph. When this happens memories of the Norse start to re-emerge…
Mythical Beasts By Innovative Kids is a book filled with mythical animals and gives a wonderful description of each. Educational and fun. My son used to ask for this as a bedtime story almost every night.
Dork Diaries Tales from a NOT-SO-Fabulous Life by Rachel Renee Russell is the first book all about the traumas Nikki deals with being in junior high school. It goes on to be a fourteen book series!
Diary Of A Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney. Both my son and daughter enjoyed this series. The series follows Greg Heffley and his struggles in high school and home. Especially his brother Rodrick.
