Director Colin Trevorrow has revealed that the title of the next Jurassic World film, the final part of the new trilogy will be called Jurassic World: Dominion as filming gets underway in Canada.

Title reveals are often fairly significant for big-budget franchise films. They could be revealed in a highly-anticipated poster or dropped at the end of a major trailer release. Jurassic World III director Colin Trevorrow elected to go down a different route. In an altogether more subtle approach, the director unveiled the name of the third film in the Jurassic World franchise in an Instagram caption.

It was Trevorrow who first got this franchise back underway. The San Francisco-born director had only helmed indie projects prior to his big break. Trevorrow went straight from the 2012 indie sci-fi hit Safety Not Guaranteed to the project working with Steven Spielberg in a modern continuation of his beloved franchise. The plan was for a series of three new films rather than the more episodic nature of the original Jurassic Park trilogy.

2015’s Jurassic World was a colossal hit. With a new-look cast consisting of Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Vincent D’Onofrio, Jurassic World smashed all box office expectations. The movie grossed well over $1.6 billion worldwide off a budget of $150 million. Those are extraordinary figures for a film that was fairly well-received by critics as well. Colin Trevorrow was even offered the chance to direct Star Wars Episode IX off the back of his success.

But then, things began to go awry for Trevorrow and the Jurassic franchise. The director stepped back from directorial duties as the Spanish filmmaker J.A. Bayona took his place behind the camera for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. The result, while still a major box office success, was not as warmly received by critics. Around the time of the film’s release, Trevorrow departed Star Wars Episode IX.

But now, Trevorrow is back behind the camera for the final part of the trilogy. But he’s not the only returning face, as Chris Pratt said in a recent interview.

“It’s got everybody. It’s got pretty much everybody in it,” Pratt said.

“Maybe I just blew it, but I don’t care. All the cast from the original Jurassic Park is coming back. It’s going to feel very much like how Endgame brought everything together for Marvel.

“It’s a massive movie, it’s a big movie. We’ll be all over the world. The story is really, really engaging, really cool. It’s gonna be big.”

Yes, the original main cast of 1993’s Jurassic Park will all be returning for the sixth feature film in the series. Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum will all be reprising their original roles for this one alongside Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard.

It’s easy to see why this decision has been made. The original Jurassic Park was a revelation upon its release and it soon became the highest-grossing movie of all time. Today, it is the oldest film currently still in the list of the top 50 highest-grossing films ever after surpassing $1 billion at the box office.

But Jurassic Park’s influence goes well beyond box office records. Steven Spielberg’s movie had an enormous impact on film and popular culture as a whole. There have been countless references to famous Jurassic Park scenes in media such as Toy Story 2, The Simpsons, and the Tomb Raider video games. There was a popular comic book series from Topps Comics and numerous theme park rides. Many games companies have also devoted titles to Jurassic Park. There was the online Jurassic Park Builder from Ludia and there is even a Jurassic Park slot available at some online casinos. What’s more, the film was even inducted into the United States National Film Registry a few years ago.

So that’s why there is so much excitement for this next, and perhaps final installment of the Jurassic franchise. Filming began in British Columbia, Canada on 25th February 2020 and is expected to continue over several months, heading to exotic locations such as Hawaii and Malta. As previously mentioned, Colin Trevorrow marked the occasion by revealing the full name of the film on his Instagram page and a number of the film’s stars followed suit.

‘JURASSIC WORLD do·min·ion /dəˈminyən/ 1. sovereignty or control. “man’s attempt to establish dominion over nature”,’ Chris Pratt wrote on his personal Instagram account. Laura Dern and Bryce Dallas Howard followed suit soon after, further cementing the integration of Jurassic World and Park together. Jurassic World Dominion is scheduled to be released on June 11th 2021.
