Spoilers will be talked about below, so please be sure to watch the latest episode before reading on! This review is based off of the dub version of Super that currently airs on Toonami.

Episode 106 wasn’t the greatest showing for both Goku and Vegeta, however it was a massive highlight for the smarter fighters like Gohan, Piccolo and even the monk, Tien. So what exactly went down to elevate these three fighters from Universe 7, well let’s get on with the review shall we?

We pick up slightly after the events of last week’s episode with Goku checking up on Master Roshi, who literally died fighting but was revived by the Saiyan with a few ki blast to the heart. Master Roshi tells his old student that he’ll be fine but just needs a moment or two to rest up and get back into the fight. Goku then leaves Roshi to his own devices and Instant Transmissions away.

Next we pick up with Gohan and Piccolo looking up at a random Pig fighter from Universe 5, who’s giving a massive monologue on a cliff about something but is then instantly sniped off the said cliff and goes tumbling down in front of the Universe 7 fighters. Both Gohan and Piccolo get bombarded by sniper fire and seek cover. Eventually they try to make a break towards the sniper after Gohan spots them. But the sniper due to having a sight advantage using orb-like-mirrors to bounce shots off of, leads Piccolo getting an arm shot off!

Piccolo is able to regrow it at the cost of stamina, destroys an orb and then comes up with the idea that they should use smoke to their advantage to dodge the sniper and their orbs. They end up covering the entire area with smoke and try to hide their ki energy, but it turns out the sniper can see them through body heat, and still keeps shooting at Piccolo and Gohan.

Piccolo tries another tactic and starts heating up the area around them all with tiny ki blasts, to mask their own body heat yet the sniper has had enough of this and starts firing multi-sniper shots all in the direction of Gohan and Piccolo. A giant blast covers the entire area as we cut to a commercial break.

When we come back we pick up with Tien who’s run towards the direction of Gohan and Piccolo after seeing the sniper fire from a distance, he then meets up with Goku and Vegeta — who are weirdly super dumb in this episode — running a full speed and not masking their ki energy. Tien yells for them to cover, but Vegeta boast that he’ll see the sniper attacking first. But right as he said that the sniper takes a shot at Vegeta and barely glazes his face with a hit! Both Goku and Vegeta duck and hide for a bit.

As it turns out, the twist of the episode was that the fighter we thought doing the sniper shots is actually a giant mirror himself and is redirecting the shots from another fighter — the actual sniper. While the mirror fighter is standing still, the actual sniper is constantly moving and never in the same spot after each fight. So Tien, Goku and Vegeta try to do a rescue for Gohan and Piccolo who are by this point pinned down heavy fire.

Goku and Vegeta take on the mirror fighter, while Tien actually multiplies himself into 4 clones and runs after the actual sniper to stop him. Krillian in the stands explains the technique to Supreme Kai, Elder Kai and Beerus that while there are 4 actual Tiens, his power is greatly diminished due to splitting up. So Tien is just sacrificing himself to get close enough to the sniper.

Goku and Vegeta on the other hand, are really dumb by this point, and try to launch both a Galick Gun and Kamehameha at the mirror fighter and behold, the attacks are reflected back at the two saiyans with a massive explosion. They then start tossing boulders at the mirror fighter, knocking him off the perch he’s been on the whole episode, he then starts yelling at the sniper fighter to back him up but he’s preoccupied with Tien who finally caught up to him after sacrificing 3 of himself.

Tien hits the sniper with a Neo Tri Beam and manages to injure both of his arms, making the sniper unable to fire a shot at anyone. Tien then commends him and says he’ll give him an honorable elimination and prepares another Neo Tri Beam. However, the sniper is able to use his limp limbs and fires straight at the ground, destroying the floor beneath them both, causing Tien to get eliminated from the tournament! The sniper then gloats standing on the edge, but before he can taunt mores the other 3 clones of Tien pop up and drags the sniper off into the abyss as well.

We end the episode with the mirror fighter running towards the edge of the arena with Goku and Vegeta right behind him, still flinging boulders at him. He yells at his sniper friend who’s been eliminated and it’s been deduced by Vegeta that without the sniper, the mirror fighter is nothing. Just then, the Pig fighter from the start of the episode comes running and hugs the mirror fighter, giving him a random monologue in the process. As the mirror fighter is trying to take the pig fighter off of him, Vegeta randomly gives him a Galick Gun attack, eliminating the two fighters with one stone. Leaving just Vegeta and Goku left by the end of it all, as Piccolo and Gohan come out of hiding and walking towards the two. However, the real winner of the episode was Tien, who back on the stands is applauded by the Kais and Beerus, who wanted to know again the name of the cloning technique that Tien did.

So while the episode was nice in highlighting the brains of Piccolo and Gohan, and even the skills of Tien, it completely made both Goku and Vegeta into fools. Why did they resort to rock throwing when they could have just ran right up to the mirror guy, after Tien got the sniper, and punched him out of the arena? It made zero sense for them to stick to ki blast attacks and rock throwing, after everything we’ve seen and know that they can do throughout all of the different Dragon Ball shows. Honestly the episode could have been massively better if both Vegeta and Goku (besides the quick Master Roshi bit at the start) weren’t in it and we just strictly focused on Piccolo, Gohan and then Tien in the second half of the episode. Everything could have played out exactly as it did, but instead of Goku throwing boulders we could have seen Gohan be a badass against the mirror fighter instead and eliminated them. Also there was a massive plot hole at the end of the episode as well with Vegeta using a Galick Gun to blast the mirror fighter out of the arena, shouldn’t that attack have been bounced back at the Saiyan Prince?

Anyways, hopefully next week’s episode is better and paints all of the Universe 11 fighters in a positive smarter way.
