Spoilers will be talked about below, so please be sure to watch the latest episode before reading on! This review is based off of the dub version of Super that currently airs on Toonami.
So with how Episode 100 ended, with Kale’s rampage causing some of the competitors to be eliminated and the face-off Goku had with Jiren you would think that we would focus solely on these two fighters duking it out right? That is actually far from the truth and Episode 101 instead goes down a different path, and that’s not really a bad thing. So lets get down with the recap and review, shall we?
Episode 101 does indeed pick up with where we left off with Caulifa taking Kale to safety after the one shot attack Jiren did to the meek Saiyan. Goku instead got only a quick 30 second word in with Jiren until he got blasted by Top from out of nowhere, sending him underground only to pop up next to Caulifa and Kale. Top instead had other plans and ordered Jiren to not fight, wanting for the two strongest Pride Troopers to maintain their strengths for later. Top then ordered five of the other, weaker Pride Troopers to fight the strange alliance of Kale, Caulifa and Goku. This group of Pride Troopers was lead by the General — the same one who spent an entire episode rescuing a cat of all things — and they were basically a more powerful form of the Ginyu Force. They even did the dramatic introduction with poses towards the Saiyans!
Elsewhere, the rest of Universe 7 regroups after Roshi eliminates an unknown fighter from the ring — who weirdly looks like a failed early design of Cell. First Tien shows up, then Gohan and then Piccolo. After that Frieza makes a dramatic entrance and eliminates the Sumo fighter that’s been bothering a few of them for the past few episodes, but Vegeta gets pissed that Frieza took his elimination away from him. However, Gohan brings up a point that both of the Androids are unaccounted for and so is Goku for them.
But speaking of Goku he’s dealing with two of the Pride Troopers, one of them can change his weight drastically making him heavier and the other can spin like a tornado. So the weight changing one has Goku in a bear hug and is pulling him down into the arena while the tornado one is just spinning directly into Goku’s chest. Things look dire for him. The rest of the Pride Troopers are dealing with Kale and Caulifa. Caulifa gets stuck with the lizard looking one who evades all of her attacks and shoots electric orbs at her. Kale dashes in to help her sister but gets caught in a dimensional bubble by the female trooper, who’s like a witch, immobilizing her completely. Things are looking dire for all of them until both of the Androids show up and even the odds!
18 and Goku take on the weight changing and tornado ones, while 17 takes on the General and the two Saiyan girls of Universe 6 take on the lizard and witch trooper. 18 and Goku fire back ki blasts, which effectively stops the weight changer and tornado one, that is until the weight changer starts spinning like a wheel and pins down 18. 18 however simply picks him up and tosses him towards the edge of the arena for an elimination; however, he’s able to stop just in time, but due to his weight change he breaks off the edge and is swiftly eliminated. The tornado one quickly retreats to the General, who gathers everyone that’s left together and orders the witch trooper to put up a massive dimensional bubble that traps only Kale and Caulifa in it leaving Goku, 18 and 17 outside.
Here we go into a deep anime trope of Caulifa explaining how she believes in Kale so much, as she herself is getting beat up by the four Pride Troopers. Kale however wishes she was strong enough to save her sister and in her fury, she manages to tap into a perfect form of her Legendary Super Saiyan form that doesn’t cause her to berserk out! The Pride Troopers charge up a giant beam blast while the Saiyan girls do the same and a beam struggle begins. At first the Pride Troopers have the advantage but then Caulifa powers up to Super Saiyan 2 and Kale taps into her Berserker side to blast the three of the four out of the arena and shatter the dimensional bubble. The witch one sneakily exits and traps herself in her own bubble to avoid getting hurt by anyone, but 18 simply just picks her up and tosses her out. And with that six of the ten Pride Troopers of Universe 11 have been eliminated from the tournament of power at the hands of Universe 6 and 7!
Now instead of fighting the Universe 6 Saiyans, Goku lets them go to recover. He being his typical self wants to fight the two of them when they are at full strength minutes later. 18 and 17 both wonder if that’s a wise choice and Goku says it’ll be okay. However, unaware to the three of fighters of Universe 7, they were being watched on by another fighter in the distance. The female/android fighter from Universe 2 (or was it Universe 3?). I don’t know, to be honest it gets hard to keep track of who is from what universe, especially ones we don’t spend a ton of time with.
So as you can see, we took a detour from how we thought the episode was going to go down. Instead of Jiren vs Goku we had a more Universe 6 vs Universe 11 story instead. I actually liked this episode a ton since it flushed out Caulifa and Kale more so, I wouldn’t be surprised if we get more episodes like this for Universe 6. Honestly I do want just a saga in Universe 6 now after watching this! It was fun seeing Universe 7 take on a supportive role for Universe 6 in the fight, yet this is still a tournament going on so letting Kale and Caulifa walk away from Universe 7 is odd. But hey, that’s Goku for you making stupid choices that come back to bite him on the ass. The only weird bit is how the other team members for Universe 6, 7 and 11 didn’t come by to support their teammates getting a trashing. While it’s explained that Top and Jiren didn’t join the fray, it doesn’t explain why Despero didn’t show up. Same can be said for Hit, Magetta, Cabba, etc. and how they didn’t help Kale and Caulifa — Hit was even in the previous episode trying to deal with a berserker Kale! And how did the rest of Universe 7’s team didn’t see the giant beam scuffle happening and dash over to help out 17, 18 and Goku? These are questions that I hope is explained in Episode 102, but until then, we just got to wait.
