Spoilers will be talked about below, so please be sure to watch the latest episode before reading on! This review is based off of the dub version of Super that currently airs on Toonami.
No fighting actually happened in Episode 92 of Dragon Ball Super, instead we were treated to some very important character beats for Universe 6, 7 and 11 as the Tournament Of Power is just 3 hours away. So lets dive deep into our review to see what worked and what didn’t.
Immediately as the episode opens we catch up with Goku who is flying over to see Hercule and Buu. Buu is still passed out and in a super deep sleep, the kind of deep sleep that Hercule says he won’t wake up from for the next two months! Hercule also said that he tried everything to wake up Buu, be it from loud music to even making Buu he’s favorite foods and hoping the smell of it all will wake him up. But nothing is working and this causes Buu to be dropped out from the Universe 7 team by Beerus.
Next we take a brief aside to a different universe, Universe 3 and see what they are up too. Universe 3 is actually a mechanical/cybernetic universe that has all of their fighters sport technological upgrades. Whis’ other younger brother along with their God Of Destruction and Supreme Kai are in a mysterious meeting with a galactic mob boss who is literally building their tournament team for them. He starts hyping up a giant robot that has all the latest state of the art anti-ring out technology and it pleases their God Of Destruction. We then cut to Universe 11 and pick up with where the General was left rescuing a cat an episode back and is greeted by Top. Top is still trying to recruit the General into the Universe 11 team, but the General says that if he joins them then who would stay back and watch over their universe? Top then responds that the newer Pride Troopers in training will be asked to watch over the cosmos and the General then finally agrees on joining.
Back on Universe 7 though, Krillian and 18 are flying over to Bulma’s house and basically everyone fills the couple in on what’s happening with Buu and what Master Roshi was up too — trying to over come his weakness of beautiful women. Which the old turtle hermit finally does!
Eventually Krillian lets slip that it’s fine and they’ll find someone else and that they’ll win the 10 million zeni that Goku said. This causes Piccolo to be confused and asked what 10 million zeni and then this all eventually snowballs into everyone finding out — outside of Whis, Beerus, Supreme Kai, Piccolo and Gohan — that Goku lied to them about the prize money and that if they don’t win their entire universe is destroyed! At this point Vegeta emerges from the Hyperbolic Time Chamber by blowing it up again, annoying Piccolo who sensed it and effectively removing the only way to wake up Buu in a short amount of time. [In case you’re wondering, the Hyperbolic Time Chamber basically compression time, a single normal day on earth is equivalent to one full year inside the chamber. So if you do the math, one earth hour inside the chamber can be about one month or so in it. This would have woken up Buu and solved everyone’s problems!]
Once we’re back from a commercial break, we go to Universe 6 to catch up with Cabba and Calufia. Cabba is trying to teach Calufia the ability to go Super Saiyan. He at first tries it the same way that Vegeta showed him and that’s by getting extremely angry and filled with rage, however this does nothing to Calufia — sure she’s mad, but it’s not enough — so instead Cabba just tells her how it feels to transform. He says it’s a special spot on the center of their back that gives a tingly feeling and that you channel the transformation from there. It’s Calufia a tries, at first she can’t maintain the form for long but then a few moments later she tries again and achieves it! She then gets such an immense power boost that she shoots a giant beam straight up into the sky, knocking Cabba away from just the draft of it and destroying the desert range they were in. Eventually Calufia yells for Kale to stop hiding from them and let Cabba teach her how to transform too. Kale is very meek and doesn’t want to, but Calufia forces her to start.
Back at Bulma’s house in Universe 7, Goku finally shows up and everyone is pissed off at him for lying at them. Goku tries to sweet talk everyone, but it’s not working. Almost everyone outside of Gohan and Piccolo, want to leave. It takes Beerus threatening Krillian with death, to have Krillian reluctantly stay. Bulma then also interjects and says that everyone will get the zeni for winning, but she wants Goku and the rest to win, cause well obviously that have too! So everyone stays in the team, but there’s still the situation with Buu not making it. So Beerus starts complaining saying that all of the best fighters are on earth somehow and if they had a member of the Frieza Force, then they would have a winning chance. This suddenly gives Goku the most drastic idea ever, he says he wants Frieza to join their team, shocking everyone as the episode ends!
So as you can see, there was so many moving pieces that we finally got the episode that flushed out a lot of the characters just hours before the tournament is set to start. The only one that I wouldn’t mind cutting though was the whole moment in Universe 3 and the robots. It just felt unneeded and a waste. That time could have been used to show off more Universe 6 stuff, like Cabba training Calufia. But other then that, it’s that twist ending of Goku actually wanting Frieza on the team. With only three hours to go though, how can they possible resurrect Frieza and get him on their side for the first time ever? That’s something we’ll for sure find out in Episode 93, I hope?
