Last week TGON was given a real treat in that we were invited by Square Enix Japan to a showcase of two of their upcoming games: Left Alive and Kingdom Hearts 3! (we’ll have a separate article for KH3).

Left Alive

Since it was announced last year at Tokyo Game Show very little information or news has been released about this PS4/PC exclusive. What we do know is that its a survival shooter set in the fictional Novo Slava in the year 2127. It tells the story from 3 different perspectives as each character deals with the devastation of an as yet unknown invasion.

Square Enix showed us a variety of gameplay which enabled us to get a closer at the upcoming game. In the first we were shown a female characters attempts to escape a building which was flooded with foot soldiers. We were told that a lot of the weapons have to be foraged and created from items you find along the way. You could also steal weapons but that of course comes with obvious risks. Before going into the fire fight the player customized their weapons with what items they had. One item of interest was this ball like device that scans the room for enemy combatants.

The next scene we were shown involved an interactive cutscene with another character, a male general. He was trying to convince a father and daughter to go with him rather than stay and wait for the army to help. This character knew that the army wasn’t coming but the father was being difficult and untrusting of the general. At every few moments you were given options on how to respond and the conversation shifted depending on what you chose. We were told that every so often scenarios like these would appear and would affect the outcome of each characters journey. In another similar scene the third protagonist, a young army fellow, stumbled upon some enemies holding civilians hostage. The player chose to engage and try to save the hostages but was only partly successful. We were told that you could easily just ignore moments like this and move but again these actions would affect the outcome for that character.

In the final scene we were shown mechs. At certain points in the game you will have to operate one of the many mechs that roam the territory of Novo Slava. The action was stellar as the machines have jet propulsion to move them front and back or side to side. The weapons were as expected of a mech: shooters on the shoulders and a strong rail type gun on the right arm.

All in all the game looked pretty good and the action and gameplay seemed well thought out. The great thing is that behind the scenes are three very talented developers: Toshifumi Nabeshima (director, Armored Core series), Yoji Shinkawa (character designer, METAL GEAR SOLID series), and Takayuki Yanase (mech designer, Ghost in the Shell: Arise, Mobile Suit Gundam 00, Xenoblade Chronicles X). The influence from each can be felt and when the finished product comes out we’re sure it’ll be amazing. The exact release date has still yet to be determined.

Keep it locked on TGON for any updates from Square Enix or the Left Alive Team
