For about half a year now, there have been rumors floating around about Joaquin Phoenix possibly playing the Joker in a new Joker origin movie. Variety first reported this back in February but it now looks like those rumors have been officially confirmed and Joaquin Phoenix is set to take on the role of one of the most iconic characters of all time.
Warner Brothers have given the go ahead for the movie which is set to start filming in September with a budget of 55 million. With Todd Philips directing and Scott Silver co-writing, the movie is intended to tell a more personal story about the Joker and what happened that made him become the mastermind criminal he is known as today. It is also separate from the other DC Universe films and said to be more of a crime drama then a comic book movie.
If you are still a fan of Jared Leto’s as the Joker, well you will still be able to get your fix since he slated to be back for the Suicide Squad sequel. It has also been said that Warner Brothers are developing a stand alone movie for him that will be separate from Phoenix’s Joker project.
I for one am really excited to see how Joaquin will do as the Joker. This is what he has said recently about working on the movie and with Todd Phillips:
“I think he’s very impressive and he seems to have a very interesting understanding of this world and what he’s trying to say. And so there is something very appealing about that and working with him on this particular project. It feels unique, it is its own world in some ways, and maybe, mostly, it scares the fucking shit out of me or something. It might as well be the thing that scares you the most”
Phoenix has been considered for another villainous DC role in the past: Lex Luthor in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” but he passed on that role. This is a bit of a different movie than ones we see him but he has expressed his excitement to take on the role. When asked what kind of movie we can expect, he said:
“I wouldn’t quite classify this as like any genre,” Phoenix said. “I wouldn’t say it’s a superhero movie, or a studio movie or a … It feels unique, and I think more than anything, and probably the most important thing, is Todd seems very passionate about it and very giving, and so that’s exciting.”
Not much more has really been said about the movie but Warner Brothers have two tables saved for next weekends San Diego Comic-Con, so maybe we will learn some more then.
What are your thoughts on Joaquin Phoenix taking on the Joker? I would love to hear in the comments below. Thanks for reading…
