The Covenant

I love movies. I really love movies about myth and magick. In today’s day and age, there are movies that cover the genre I love and am a complete nerd about. I love that Hollywood is casting witches in a more favorable light today. Once upon a time that was nearly unheard of. Here are my favorites witch movies ever!

The Craft is one of my all-time favorite movies. It stars Fairuza Balk as Nancy, Robin Tunney as Sarah, Neve Campbell as Bonnie and Rachel True as Rochelle. Sarah transfers to a new school when she and her parents move to a new town. She falls into the company of the Catholic School’s witches. They have formed their own “coven” but have had little success at conjuring any magic themselves. Sarah is a natural witch. She inherently has magic and Nancy takes advantage of that. Nancy, Sarah, Bonnie, and Rochelle invoke Manon and Nancy ends up going nuts. There is an epic fight between Nancy and Sarah.

The Covenant has often been called the male Craft. It stars Steven Strait as Caleb, Sebastian Stan as Chase, Taylor Kitsch as Pogue, Chance Crawford as Tyler and Toby Hemingway as Reid. Caleb, Pogue, Tyler, and Reid are descendants of the 5 powerful families of Ipswich. The fifth family was thought to have died out. The newcomer, Chase turns out to be the bastard child of the fifth family and power hungry.

Warlock has been a favorite of mine since I was a child. This film came out in 1989 and stars Julian Sands as the Warlock, Lori Singer as Kassandra and Richard E. Grant as Giles Redferne. The Warlock is on the run from witch hunter Giles Redferne with good reason. This warlock is, in fact, evil and has killed many times in the 17th century. While he flees he is brought to the 20th century and Redferne is brought with him. To overcome this ancient evil Kassandra and Redferne must work together.

Warlock The Armageddon is even better than the first movie Warlock. This one still stars Julian Sands as the Warlock, Chris Young as Kenny and Paula Marshall as Samantha. The Warlock is back after being born as Satan’s son and dead set on collecting sacred runes of the Druids.

Beautiful Creatures is a popular book series by authors Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl that was made into a movie. It stars Alden Ehrenreich as Ethan, Alice Englert as Lena and Jeremy Irons as Macon. Ethan lives in Gatlin, South Carolina and longs to get out. Then Lena comes to town and Ethan falls for her. He finds out that she is a witch and that soon her “true nature” will show if she is to be a good witch or a bad witch. Unfortunately, there are other books in the series and no more movies were ever made.

The Wizard of Oz gave me my first glimpse at witches. It stars Judy Garland as Dorothy, Ray Bolger as the Scarecrow, Bert Lahr as the Cowardly Lion, Jack Haley as the Tin Man, Billie Burke as Glinda the Good Witch of the North and Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch of the West.  Dorothy is a girl in Kansas who is transported by a tornado to the magical world of Oz. She wants to go home to Kansas and the only way for that to happen to find the Wizard of Oz. She is given the ruby slippers from the Wicked Witch of the East after her house drops on her and kills her and is pointed in the direction of the Emerald City and the Wizard. Along the way, she encounters the Scarecrow, The Cowardly Lion and the Tin Man. When they finally reach the Emerald City they find that Dorothy had the power to go home all along.

The Last Witch Hunter is absolutely awesome. I love that it shows witches in both a positive and negative light. It stars Vin Diesel as Kaulder, Rose Leslie as Chloe and Julie Engelbrecht as the Witch Queen. 800 years ago Kaulder hunted the Witch Queen and just before they defeated her she cursed Kaulder with eternal life. Kaulder makes it his mission to kill evil witches and keep other witches in check. Come to modern times there is a stirring of the Witch Queen rising again. Kaulder must stop her at all costs. He goes to Chloe to make a memory spell. At first, Chloe refuses to know who he is. She later agrees to help and goes against the Witch Queen at Kaulder’s side.

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters is another movie that shows Witches in both a positive and negative light. It stars Jeremy Renner as Hansel, Gemma Arterton as Gretel and Famke Janssen as Muriel. This movie tells what happens after the fairytale ends. They grow up to be powerful witch hunters. They kill all witches believing them all to be evil. Hansel meets a woman who changes his mind eventually but they must stop Muriel, the leader of all the witches, so the witches stop killing children. During this time they learn the truth of their own lineage.

Last but certainly not least is Hocus Pocus. Hocus Pocus is a super awesome movie that is too funny! It stars Bette Midler as Winifred Sanderson, Sarah Jessica Parker as Sarah Sanderson, Kathy Najimy as Mary Sanderson, Omri Katz as Max, Thora Birch as Dani, Vinessa Shaw as Allison and Sean Murray as Thackery Binx. Legend has it that the evil Sanderson Sisters, Winifred, Sarah and Mary were once upon a time trapped in their old house and can only be released by a virgin lighting the black flame candle. Thackery was cursed after his sister Emily was killed by the Sisters so he protected the candle. Max and Dani moved to town and around Halloween found themselves at the Sanderson home. Max lights the candle and inadvertently releases the Sisters. Max, Dani and Allison must stop them before they kill all the town’s children and regain their youth, power and are alive forever.
