March 1, 2019 we are finally receiving the third and final film in the How to Train your Dragon trilogy, and it would appear our beloved Toothless is getting himself a love interest.
As we have believed from previous moves and the Netflix series, Toothless was thought to be the last of his kind. However, in recently released screen caps of the new move, How to Train your Dragon: Hidden World, it appears Toothless is finally finding dragons like himself.
The official posted synopsis reads:
As Hiccup fulfills his dream of creating a peaceful dragon utopia, Toothless’ discovery of an untamed, elusive mate draws the Night Fury away. When danger mounts at home and Hiccup’s reign as village chief is tested, both dragon and rider must make impossible decisions to save their kind.

Now, what do we know so far about this new She-dragon? The writer and director of the films, Dean Deblois says “She is very rare, very elusive and very wild.” Unlike Toothless, who is a Night Fury, it would seem his new female companion is a fire-spitting, “Light Fury”

As would be expected from a dragon who thought he was alone, Toothless struggles in the flirtation game, much like his human counterpart, Hiccup, did with Astrid. What does this mean though for our favorite human-dragon duo? We will have to wait and see it seems!

We do know, however, that the duo will fight at least one more common foe.

Grimmel the Grisly, the notorious big game hunter who claims to fame is almost wiping out the entire Night Fury species. Toothless, being the one who managed to evade him, is now the prize he seeks to claim. F. Murray Abraham, Grimmel’s voice actor, claims, “Grimmel is effective because he’s so smart, so dedicated to the hunt, so single-minded. He’s the perfect balance to goodness. We like his clarity, he knows exactly who he is.”

Now if you have ever read the How to Train Your Dragon book series, by Cressida Cowell, she concludes her stories with an explanation as to why we don’t see dragons in the world today. Writer/Director DeBlois agrees with her methodology, “I wanted to give this a definitive end,” he says. He goes on to make one point very clear though, “Our narratives are quite different. But we will explain why dragons have disappeared into legend, and there are still questions: Could dragons come back? Are dragons still around? All of these will be answered in the third film.”
It would appear that even those who have read the books won’t know what exactly to expect with this ending. If this third and final film is anywhere as amazing as the first two, I doubt anyone will find themselves disappointed, but I am sure we will all be wanting more.
