If you’ve been paying attention to the news in the gaming community recently, you may have heard about how FGC furry Sonicfox turned up to Clutch 2018 a few days ago and dominated an Injustice 2 and a Dragon Ball Fighters Z tournament…while wearing a fursuit. No, seriously. I’ve heard of Sonicfox before, and even watched a couple of his games via YouTube, so I decided that after this recent escapade it was time that we all took a look at this very peculiar FGC gamer.
So who is Sonicfox exactly? Born Dominique McLean, Sonicfox is a 20-year-old American furry competitive gamer who specializes mainly in fighting games. He started off playing for Critical Reaction in 2015 and would later join up with EchoFox in 2017 – talk about a coincidence with names.  The man himself seems like a rather likable fellow, and usually displays a friendly, cheerful, carefree attitude – which is surprising given how stressful and high stakes some of these tournaments seem to get. But, it’s nice to know that there are folks keeping things friendly and cordial in the gaming community – I know I’ve seen my fair share of folks on games that take things way too seriously. It’s understandable to have a play to win mentality, but that needs to be tempered with good sportsmanship. This also helps him out – Sonicfox has become known from never letting a defeat get to him too much, and is able to bounce back from losses rather strongly. He’s is also never seen at events or tournaments without his trademark furry blue fox ears hat and some other form of furry clothing, always keeping the hat on even in the heat of battle. And if there ever arises a moment where he removes the ears, such as in Evo 2016 when he came close to losing the championship, it’s a surprise and one of the rare moments where Sonicfox drops the carefree demeanor. It’s like Mr. Karate going serious – and the one time that happened he became an overpowered end boss in the Capcom vs. SNK series!

As mentioned before, Sonicfox specializes in beatin’ down opponents in fighting games. In fact, he first made his way with Skullgirls,  Mortal Kombat X, and Injustice: Gods Among Us. He’s also been seen doing some good work in other big fighting game franchises such as Dead or Alive, the Marvel Vs. Capcom games, and has already been making a name for himself with Dragon Ball Fighter Z. He currently seems to be active in Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, Injustice 2, and the aforementioned Dragon Ball Fighter Z.
How has Sonicfox “left his mark,” you ask? Well, he’s claimed over a dozen 1st place wins at various tournaments; not only that, but he was also an Evo Champion for three years in a row, knocking out a win at Injustice in 2014, and then doubling up with Mortal Kombat X wins in both 2015 and 2016. I actually remember seeing “The Greatest MKX Player In The World is  Furry” headlines after those wins. He’s also known for being a pretty steady winner – and even when he gets beaten he can still end up winning a tournament! No, really! And if that wasn’t enough, there was the most recent escapade where he swept away Clutch 2018 by dominating Injustice 2 and Dragon Ball Fighter Z. As one who suits himself, I can tell you that your visibility severely goes out the window, and playing games with it on is made harder, even if you don’t wear fursuit gloves. I tried playing Contra, a game I darn nearly know front and back, in my Niko head and struggled to keep track of everything. Not to mention the whole getting a fursuit thing – that’s considered a red letter day for a lot of furries, and I’m looking forward to more tournament wins in suit!
