Hades, whose name means the unseen, is the Lord of the underworld. He is the brother to Zeus, Poseidon, Demeter, Hera and Hestia. He is the husband of Persephone and father of Zagreus, Macaria and the Erinyes (also known as the Furies). Hades is popular in video games such as Age of Mythology and God of War and even made an appearance in Kingdom Hearts. He is popular in movies such as Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief or Clash of the Titans and Wrath of the Titans. He is in literature beside mythology also and has even made TV appearances in Hercules the Legendary Journeys and Xena Princess Warrior.

Hades and his brothers and sisters took down their parents Rhea and Cronos and the other Titans. They ushered in a new era of Gods. Once the Titans were imprisoned the brothers drew lots. Hades drew the Underworld. Hades is considered the richest God because he lives under the ground with all the riches that the Earth has to offer.

Spirits are escorted to his realm by Hermes, messenger of the Gods. Charon ferries the souls across the river Styx. The souls of the dead were not judged by Hades himself however. They were Rhadamanthys, Minos and Aeacus who were sons of Zeus and had helped establish law and order on Earth. Once they were judged and sent to their assigned realms Hades ensured they stayed in the Underworld and followed the rules. It is important to point out that while Hades is the God of the Underworld and the Dead, he is not Death himself.

He is a fearsome God to be sure. Hades is strong enough to overthrow the Titans and to keep the dead in check. Worshippers even averted their eyes when making sacrifices to Hades for fear of attracting his attention. Is he a God you fear? Let me know below.

I am a wife, mother, writer and nerd. My dad cultivated my love of sci-fi as a child and I haven’t looked back since. I love myth and magic. I am an avid reader and love TV and movies. I love the movies Willow and Legend and the Star Trek ones both old and new. Laurell K. Hamilton, who writes the Anita Blake and Merry Gentry series, and Jim Butcher, who writes the Harry Dresden series, are probably my top two favorite authors. I love learning and writing about mythology and there is so much out there to learn, see and imagine. Come fly away with me.
