With the wild success of the original How to Train Your Dragon and its sequel, it’s understandable that the third installment in the series is being met with huge anticipation. Even though it’s a year away, we can hardly wait, and every piece of information we get from Dreamworks is hoarded.
We’re almost like dragons ourselves.
We don’t know all that much about the movie yet, but what we do know is enough to get us super excited. Obviously, spoilers are incoming, so take care.
If you’ll remember from the last movie, things have changed a lot on Berk. Hiccup and Toothless drove off the dragon slaver Drago Bludvist by besting his Bewilderbeast. As a result, Toothless became the new alpha, the “King of Dragons.” In addition, Hiccup reunited with his mother Valka, who was kidnapped by dragons when he was young.
Unfortunately, all this came at a great cost. Toothless, under the hypnotic thrall of the old alpha, killed Hiccup’s father Stoick the Vast. As such Hiccup is the new chief of Berk, with all the responsibilities the position entails. He has Astrid and his mother to help him of course, but Astrid is just as inexperienced as he is and his mother has been away for a long while.
As well, it seems that Toothless himself might be absent, thus furthering the pressure on Hiccup’s shoulders. The plot synopsis released for the movie says, “As Hiccup fulfills his dream of creating a peaceful dragon utopia, Toothless’s discovery of an untamed, elusive mate draws the dragon away. When danger mounts at home and Hiccup’s reign as village chief is tested, both dragon and rider must make impossible decisions to save their kind.”
The presence of another Night Fury is something fans have been expecting to crop up for some time. Thus far, neither of the movies nor the Dragons cartoon series has even hinted at another Night Fury being around. One of the impossible decisions mentioned might have something to do with that; Toothless might have to choose between staying on Berk with Hiccup and going with the new Night Fury back to the wild.
The part about danger mounting doubtlessly has to do with the brand new villain named Grimmel the Grisly, voiced by F. Murray Abraham. There’s nothing known about him other than this, but he seems to be a bigger threat than ever. Cressida Cowell, author of the book series the movies are based on, started her series with the fact that dragons are no longer present in the world. She’s stated that the third movie will end the same way, with an explanation as to why. Grimmel the Grisly most likely has something to do with this.
All the voice actors for the main characters, including Valka and Eret, have been confirmed as returning for this film. Stoick and Drago Bludvist’s actors will also be returning, although it’s unclear how their characters will show up. Flashback, dream sequence, or spooky viking ghosts – who knows?
The finale of the wildly successful How to Train Your Dragon series is slated to come out on March 1st, 2019 (after being pushed back five times).
