This year, The Met Gala’s theme was Rei Kawakubo/ Comme des Garçons. If you don’t know much about Comme des Garçons, then here’s a little taste of some of her work.

Now, I thought a lot of the guests played it safe, but here’s my picks for both men and women, who exuded the Comme des Garçons spirit.

Rihanna

Rihanna actually wore a Comme des Garçons dress, and I think she rocked it. The theme was all about avant garde, and so this is why she pulled it off. Also, she made the dress the focal point, and didn’t go too crazy with the rest of her outfit.

Dakota Johnson

Dakota is wearing Gucci and it really made an impact, without actually being avant garde. There was just enough volume to the dress, that it fit in with the theme and it didn’t swallow her up. I also like that she has her hair up, to allow for the shoulder detailing to be visible.

Janelle Monáe

Janelle is wearing Ralph & Russo, and she is definitely fitting in with the theme. She has been wearing a lot of white and black recently, and it doesn’t seem to fail her. Even though the feather neck piece seems a little questionable, I think in this circumstance, it works well to add more drama.

Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka is wearing Ralph Lauren, and I think this was a cool take on the trench coat. Ralph took something simple, and transformed it into something extravagant. The collar is enlarged and of course there is now a train. I also love that it’s paired with some kick ass boots.

Lily Collins

Lily is wearing Giambattista Valli, and I think the dress is both girly and hard at the same time. The volume in the dress, makes it appropriate for the theme of the Gala, but what I really love is her hair. It’s a definite homage to Rei Kawakubo’s hairstyle, which was a nice touch.

Zendaya

Zendaya is wearing Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda, and I’m in love with this dress. It’s a show stopper and the colors and the print are beautiful! It’s not avant garde, but it’s a hard print to pull off. Also, the hair makes the look more modern.

Blake Lively

Blake is wearing Atelier Versace, and this fits her like a glove. I love how the dress is very neutral, and then you get those pops of blues at the bottom. It’s a very intricate dress, and it’s hard not to stare at. Ryan’s not looking too shabby either 😝.

Halle Berry

Halle is wearing Versace, and like Blake’s dress, it’s giving me similar vibes. Halle always likes to flaunt her body, so this was the perfect dress to wear for this occasion. The black and gold looks gorgeous against her skin and the floral detailing is amazing! What you can’t see, is she has some gold hair accessories in her hair too, which went perfectly with her dress.

Celine Dion

Celine is wearing Versace and I feel like she never ages. For someone her age, I think she’s showing a respectable amount of skin and it’s age appropriate for her. It’s somewhat of a toned down avant garde, which is why I like it. But what I think amped it up, was her headpiece.

Tracee Ellis Ross

Tracee is wearing Comme des Garçons and now I feel like we’ve come full circle. Unlike Rihanna’s look, Tracee chose a more toned down outfit from the designer. It still has that nice avant garde structure, but it’s definitely more of Tracee’s style. I love the studded shoes too.

Donald Glover

Donald is wearing Burberry and I love that he chose a fun patterned jacket. I like that the jacket is still subtle with the dark toned colors, but has just enough edge, that it goes along with the theme.

Joe Jonas

Joe is wearing a custom H&M tuxedo, and I’m loving the look of this. It’s your typical pinstripe tux, but with a twist. Rei Kawakubo loves to use blacks and reds in her collections, so I like that the same colors were used in Joe’s tuxedo. It’s modern without being too over the top.

Wiz Khalifa

Wiz is wearing Thom Browne, who is also an avant garde designer, and I think Wiz wears this really well. It’s sleek with the black and white color palette, but the cut of the jacket is different. Also, I think the shoes make the look more edgy, but compliment the outfit very well.

Presley Walker Gerber

Presley, aka Cindy Crawford’s son, is wearing Topshop. I love the velvet texture of the jacket and the printed handkerchief. It’s always nice to see pops of color in a tux, instead of the usual black on black. Since he’s of the younger generation, he can pull it off and really make a statement at the event.

Armie Hammer

Armie is wearing Ralph Lauren Purple Label and I’m strangely loving this. Even though seeing a man wear a turtleneck in this day and age would be a faux pas, I think this really works on Armie. I think it compliments his monochromatic outfit, and gives it a more casual, yet sophisticated look.

Matthew Rhys

Matthew is wearing Rag & Bone and I’m so happy that he wore a kilt. Gotta represent the Welsh. Kilts are a tricky thing to wear, but since it’s The Met Gala, it totally works. It makes his outfit way more interesting and gives a little edge to his entire look.

Rami Malek

Rami is wearing Dior Homme and he looks really good in that red color. Like I said before, Rei likes to use blacks and reds in her collections, so this tuxedo fits perfectly with the theme. It’s another monochromatic look and it works really well. I feel like Rami always likes to mix it up with color, and he’s one of few people who could pull this look off.

Ansel Elgort

Ansel is wearing Tom Ford. And even though there is nothing immensely intriguing about his look, I do like his outfit because he wears the white jacket/black pants combo, well. Only a fair few decide to take the plunge and wear the white jacket, and I think Ansel pulls it off. He looks more sophisticated and I like that his hair is more slicked back. He looks like he came out of a James Bond movie.

Dominic Cooper

Dominic is wearing Burberry and I also like that he took the plunge into color. Not a crazy color, but blue always looks nice and fresh. I gotta say also, that I love that he’s carrying a camera in this picture. I guess he had to document the night.

Jaden Smith

Jaden is wearing Louis Vuitton and I like that he chose something very different. Obviously, his freshly cut dreadlocks need to go, but besides that, I love the tight, skinny pant legs, and the coat. It’s a new take on the classic tuxedo, and I think it looks really cool. It still looks put together, but in a sense, more casual. Also, I love that he opted to not wear a dress shirt.
