I honestly don’t think that there is a character as much portrayed in movies and tv-shows as Robin Hood. His earliest appearance dates back to the 15th century in the form of a ballad. Many of the elements that we now use to identify Robin were already clear back then, from the Nottingham setting to the bitter aversion between Robin and the Sheriff of Nottingham. But also his support for the lower classes, although this was first explicit stated in a tale from 1592, his outstanding skill as an archer and his associated special regard for women were already stated in the early stories.
There will be some additions to the ever growing list of Robin Hood appearances, which started with the first movie in 1908, in the upcoming years. The Wachowskis have written a film called Hood, a modern adaption of the Robin Hood legend. And Disney is developing a movie currently titled Nottingham & Hood with a tone similar to the Pirates of the Caribbean films. But we are not here to write about any of those movies, but about Robin Hood: Origins, and here is what we know so far:
1. The story
We don’t know much about the plot so far, you could say nearly nothing since they’ve only just begun filming. We do know that it’s going to be a gritty, dark and grounded retelling of Robin Hood’s origins, following his experiences fighting in the crusades. Returning to the Sherwood Forest, Robin Hood finds it swarming with corruption and evil. He forms a band of outlaws, and they take matters into their own hands, leading a revolt against the corrupt English crown.
Filming began on February 20, 2017, at different locations in Dubrovnik, Croatia. This is the same place where Game of Thrones films its King’s Landing set and given the grandeur of those scenes, it’s not surprising that Robin Hood: Origins would film in the same area to establish a similar feel for their film.
2. The Cast
The cast members that are confirmed are:
- Taron Egerton as Robin Hood
- Jamie Foxx as Little John, the leader of the outlaw’s group Merry Men and Robin’s trusted sidekick
- Eve Hewson as Maid Marian, Robin’s love interest
- Jamie Dornan as Will Scarlet, half-brother of Robin Hood, member of Merry Men and husband of Marian
- Ben Mendelsohn as the Sheriff of Nottingham
- Tim Minchin as Friar Tuck, a portly, jovial friar with an affinity for food and wine and usually one of the Merry Men.
- Paul Anderson as a yet-to-be-revealed character
The website also details some of the filming that went on, describing an action scene that had Robin Hood and Little John evading charging horses, while pyrotechnics went off in the background.
That is all we know so far! Robin Hood: Origins is set for release on March 23, 2018.
