In the past, it has been rare that the topic of abortion is broached in pop culture, especially on a 22-minute comedy program, but recently You’re the Worst went where most sitcoms do not – depicting Lindsay’s choice to terminate her pregnancy. (Followed shortly thereafter by abortion storylines on two other shows that we cover – Jane the Virgin and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.)
I can’t say that I was surprised at this arc. From the beginning, the writers have shown that Lindsay is both unhappy in her marriage and unhappy with her impending pregnancy. While, at times, she showed that she has it in her to be a successful mother and wife, most of the time it was obvious that this family is not the one she would have chosen for herself. The episode was both honest and straightforward – Lindsay and Lindsay alone made the choice to end her pregnancy after weeks of unhappily trying to make it work with Paul. And when it was all over, she was calm and at peace with her decision. It has been refreshing to see shows that I care about approach a topic such as abortion in such a normal way. After all, for better or for worse, this procedure is a reality of everyday life for women across our country.
Elsewhere
Gretchen seems to be trying her level best to be an open and honest participant in her therapy and it finally seems to be helping her. Unfortunately, Jimmy’s revelation that he needs to reevaluate their relationship might be a setback.
I was pleased that Edgar seems to be making personal progress. When he volunteer to visit an audition with Dorothy to offer moral support he is the one that ends up with a job as a comedy writer. Unfortunately for Dorothy, her career isn’t going nearly as smoothly and she hoped. Edgar’s success, seemingly at the expense of Dorothy’s seems to be taking a toll on their relationship.
After spending an entire episode building a treehouse to rid himself of his father, only to realize that he needs to reevaluate his entire life (including his relationship with Gretchen.) After making a pro and con list there is a very real possibility that Jimmy and Gretchen’s relationship may be coming to the conclusion that they both felt was inevitable.

She denied a child the opportunity of being raised by the most wonderful father. She broke the dreams of a really great and devoted husband, and don’t forget, she impregnated herself! I really hate that bitch.
