TGON’s Monday Motivation: Back to School Edition

New year. New chapter. Same you, but better.

It is back to school week and whether you are the one heading into a new classroom or the parent watching someone you love walk through those doors for the first time, this one is for you. New beginnings are equal parts exciting and terrifying, and the fandoms we love have always understood that better than anyone.

This week TGON’s Monday Motivation goes cross-fandom. One quote each from movies, television, gaming, books, and comics. Five different worlds, five different voices, all of them saying the same thing: you are ready. You just have to walk through the door.

1. “Oh yes, the past can hurt. But the way I see it, you can either run from it or learn from it.” — Rafiki, The Lion King (Movie)

Rafiki hits Simba over the head with a stick and then says this. Which is honestly the most efficient way anyone has ever delivered a life lesson. Simba spent years running from who he was because the past felt too heavy to carry into the future. Rafiki, in his infinite wisdom, pointed out that the weight does not go away by running. It just slows you down more.

Whatever happened last year, last semester, or last chapter, you do not have to pretend it did not happen. You just have to decide what you are going to do with it now. That is what a new school year is for. Learn from it. Walk in.

2. “We accept the love we think we deserve.” — Charlie, The Perks of Being a Wallflower (Book)

Stephen Chbosky wrote this line for a kid who had spent his whole life making himself small so other people could be comfortable, and it quietly rearranged the thinking of an entire generation of readers. You teach people how to treat you by what you accept from them. And that starts with what you believe you are worth.

Walking into a new school year is a chance to reset that standard. What kind of friendships do you deserve? What kind of classroom experience? What kind of effort from yourself? You get what you believe you are worth. Start believing in a bigger number this year.

3. “Get up. The world needs you to.” — Amanda Waller, Suicide Squad (Comics)

Amanda Waller is not known for her warmth. She is known for results. She says this not as an encouragement but as a statement of fact, which somehow makes it land harder than any pep talk could. The world is not waiting for you to feel ready. It is waiting for you to show up.

Back to school is not always the fresh exciting start the supply hauls on TikTok make it look like. Sometimes it is hard. Sometimes you would rather stay home. Get up anyway. The world needs you to, and more importantly, so do you.

4. “What I hear when I’m being yelled at is people caring loudly at me.” — Leslie Knope, Parks and Recreation (Television)

Leslie Knope has never once let opposition, criticism, or a hard Monday talk her out of showing up with everything she has. She could take any pushback, any obstacle, any person telling her no, and somehow find the version of it that made her want to work harder. That reframe is a superpower and it is completely learnable.

This one is for every tough teacher, every hard assignment, every coach or parent or advisor who is pushing you harder than you want to be pushed right now. They are caring loudly. The people who do not care do not push. Let them push. Come back tomorrow ready for more.

5. “Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.” — Nate, Disco Elysium (Gaming)

Disco Elysium is not a traditional game and this is not a traditional back to school quote. It is something quieter and more honest than that. Every door you are walking through right now only exists because something else closed. The summer ended. The old grade ended. The version of you that existed last June ended. That is not a loss. It is the mechanism.

New beginnings do not appear from nothing. They come from the courage to close what came before and walk into what is next. You already did the hardest part by ending the last chapter. The new one is waiting. Go write it.
