If you have ever stayed up until 2am convinced you would stop after one more quest, this edition is for you. RPGs demand more from their players than almost any other genre. They ask you to invest, to care, to keep going through the difficult stretches because the payoff is worth it. The greatest ones give you characters who have earned every word they say. These are five of those words.

Back to school season is here, the RPG release calendar is stacked, and Monday is the final boss standing between you and your week. Time to gear up.

1. “We don’t get to choose how we start in this life. Real growth is what we do with the hand we’re dealt.” — Gustave, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 won Game of the Year for 2025 and it earned every vote. Gustave leads a group of people who have already been told they are going to die. The Paintress has painted their number and that should be the end of the story. He decides it is not. This line is why.

You do not get to pick your starting stats. You do not get to choose the family, the circumstances, the setbacks, or the hand you were dealt at the beginning. What you do with it from here is entirely yours. Gustave took an impossible hand and led an expedition against a god. Your Monday is considerably more manageable by comparison.

2. “I am the blade of fate. And fate has no mercy.” — Ciri, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Ciri spent most of her life being hunted, used, and told that her power belonged to someone else. She decided otherwise. By the time she says this she has crossed dimensions, survived things that should have killed her twice over, and come out the other side as one of the most formidable characters in RPG history. Not because fate was kind to her. Because she took it by the throat.

Walk into your week like Ciri. You are not at the mercy of whatever is coming. You are the one deciding how this goes. Fate does not get a vote unless you give it one.

3. “To be forgotten is worse than death.” — Freya, Final Fantasy IX

Freya Crescent says this after losing almost everything she ever cared about, and she does not say it with self-pity. She says it with absolute conviction about what makes a life meaningful. Being remembered. Leaving a mark. Doing something that outlasts the doing of it.

Final Fantasy IX remains one of the most emotionally resonant RPGs ever made and Freya is a huge reason why. Her whole arc is about choosing to keep fighting even when the thing you were fighting for is gone. The work still matters. The effort still matters. Do something this week that is worth remembering. Freya did not survive everything she survived so you could coast through a Tuesday.

4. “The world doesn’t owe you a more meaningful existence.” — V, Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 is set in a world that has commodified everything including human consciousness, and V navigates it with the kind of hard-won clarity that only comes from having genuinely nothing left to lose. This line is not cynical. It is liberating. The world is not going to hand you purpose. You have to build it yourself from whatever is in front of you.

Cyberpunk 2077 had a full revitalization in 2025 with its Nintendo Switch 2 release and a whole new audience is discovering Night City right now. If you are one of them, this is the line that will stay with you longest. The world does not owe you meaning. Go make some.

5. “Struggle is what gives life its texture.” — The Tarnished (loading screen), Elden Ring

Elden Ring does not hold your hand. It does not tell you where to go, what to do, or whether you are capable of surviving what is ahead. It just puts you in the world and lets you figure it out. The loading screens are some of the most quietly profound writing in modern gaming, and this one lands differently every time you die and come back.

Struggle is not the enemy of a good week. It is the texture of it. The resistance is what makes the progress feel like something. If Monday feels hard, if this week feels like a boss fight you are not sure you can win, remember that Elden Ring taught an entire generation that the hardest path is usually the one worth taking. Struggle. Come back. Try again. That is the whole game.
