“Who let the kiss out, smooch, smooch, smooch, smooch, smooch”

As big sci-fi movie Project Hail Mary approaches it’s opening weekend, Ryan Gosling is doing the media run!

In Project Hail Mary, Gosling plays Ryland Grace, a molecular biologist thrown into a plot to save the Earth from it’s dying sun. The movie is a film adaption of the novel, written by author of The Martian, Andy Weir. Even before the movie’s release, people and critics have claimed it as the decades best sci-fi movie with a 94% certified fresh from Rotten Tomatoes. The movie releases in one week on March 20th, and as part of the promo, Ryan Gosling hosted Saturday Night Live last weekend.

As a personal fan of SNL, I get so excited when Ryan Gosling hosts. His deliveries, sketches, and constant breaking of character always makes it a great watch. It’s safe to say, that this weekend I was not disappointed. Here are some of the sketches you should be watching this week if you’re excited to see Ryan Gosling in Project Hail Mary!

WEDDING TRADITION

It’s the first sketch of the show, and Ryan is already losing it. That means we’re in for a treat.

“Wedding Tradition” focuses on the idea of someone at a wedding learning that the clinking of drinking glasses is a tradition for the wife and groom to kiss . . . then they abuse that concept. Dressed as “Reba McEntire at the Grammys”, Gosling plays a guest at the wedding and interrupts every speech by clinking his glass.

CYCLOPS

“Guys, I got the treasure!”

This sketch was too good that even the cast members could barely hold it together. It’s a miracle they even finished it in time with the way every member had to break character at least once. In “Cyclops”, Ryan Gosling, Mikey Day, and Kenan Thompson play three cyclops’ at the end of a long and tiring journey to find some missing treasure. The only way to get this treasure, however, is to answer a riddle and face the two goddesses (Ashley Padilla and Veronika Slowikowska) who protect it.

In few words, cyclops’ are not the brightest creatures. And I can only hope Ryan Gosling imitates a cyclops in another role in the future, because his impersonation was outstandingly hilarious. Also, shoutout to the SNL makeup department. That cyclops makeup and extra-eye placement was perfect.

PASSING NOTES

It’s easy knowledge that Ryan Gosling is notorious for breaking character whenever he is on Saturday Night Live. As a viewer, that’s what I find so enjoyable when he hosts. I think some of the most famous and funniest sketches of SNL are the ones where everyone breaks out laughing because they cannot hold it together. Watching someone else try not to laugh always makes me laugh in turn.

Saturday Night Live actually did something they haven’t done before. In “Passing Notes” which has Ryan, Ashley, and Mikey, a teacher and a principal scold a classroom of students for passing notes in the middle of their lecture. As a punishment for those students, the principal and the teacher read the notes out loud for everyone to hear. This is where SNL, in a graphic, informs the audience (and the audience only) that the notes Ryan and Ashley are about to read have been changed since rehearsal.

It’s the first time I can think of that Saturday Night Live went out of their way and hoped that they could get their cast members to break character. Usually, it’s frowned upon for the actors to continuously laugh at the jokes they’re making, but when Ryan Gosling’s on the show, all bets are off.

THE GOO GOO MAN

I don’t know who or what the Goo Goo Man is, and no one else does either. Ryan and Sarah Sherman play a couple who have to pay some room charges before checking out of their hotel. Before paying, Mikey Day informs the couple that the Goo Goo Man visited their room twice, while Ryan stays firm that he only visited once.

I can’t take Ryan seriously when he is wearing a wizards hat, glasses, and holding a magic wand, while complaining about the pricing of ‘The Goo Goo Man’. And Ryan can’t take it seriously, either.

THE SIGN OF THE TIMES

As I suspected, Ryan Gosling did another amazing job hosting Saturday Night Live. Every sketch was laugh-out-loud, not to mention that there was also some amazing music breaks from Gorillaz. Harry Styles was there too! As usual, it was an all out party that was pre-celebrating the success for Project Hail Mary. Seriously, Project Hail Mary is just getting better and better reviews day by day. If I can love watching Ryan Gosling just on SNL, I know that I am going to fall in love with him playing Ryland Grace on the big screen.

Saturday Night Live and it’s episodes are currently streaming on Peacock.

Project Hail Mary releases in theatres everywhere on March 20th.
