Spring is on it’s way! That means the snow is melting, the sun is coming out, and the current fate of the realm rests upon the hilt of your sword . . . wait, what? That’s right! Fantasy TV is back!
Fantasy hasn’t gone anywhere, especially in the visual formats, but there is a lot of great stuff coming out right now! Between animated shows, mythology based-shows, and your regular knights-of-the-round-table empires, you might have some catching up to do this spring.
At The Game of Nerds, we live on fantasy-based media. Books, shows, graphic novels, movies—any and all of it we have covered. Today, however, we’re looking at 5 of the most-popular and binge-worthy shows you should be watching right now! And I can attest to the binge-worthy part, because this author has binge-watched 2 of the 5 shows, in the very same day. Anything is possible with some magic, and a streaming service at your side.
Your journey awaits!
THE MIGHTY NEIN
“They’re still figuring this whole ‘saving the realm’ thing out. The Mighty Nein follows a group of fugitives and outcasts, bound by secrets and scars. But when a powerful arcane relic known as ‘The Beacon’ falls into dangerous hands, they must learn to work together to save the realm and stop reality itself from unraveling” (Amazon Prime Video).
The Mighty Nein is another magical creation from Critical Role, a web series of voice actors that play the tabletop role-playing game, Dungeons & Dragons. These voice actors have created worlds and characters so popular, that they were able to create their own animated show from it! The Mighty Nein, specifically, is their second campaign and second show.
As one of the shows this author did binge-watch in a day, let me tell you, this was really good! The Mighty Nein follows characters Jester, Yasha, Nott the Brave, Mollymauk, Caleb, Fjord, and Beauregard—a group of people that shouldn’t work well together, but do. Each character has their own complex background, flaws, and puzzles that the audience picks up along the way. You also do not need to be familiar with the web series to watch it at all, but if you are familiar with it, you’ll certainly pick up some hidden jokes and meanings.
It’s got adult humor, a wicked villain, found family tropes, and a spectacular cast consisting of Nathan Fillion, Ming-Na Wen, and Alan Cumming. That’s a win, win, win, win—a quadruple win.
The Mighty Nein is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS
“A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wander Westeros in the new series adapted from George R. R. Martin’s novella” (HBO Max).
The second show that I also binge-watched, A Knight of The Seven Kingdoms, was amazingly well done. I’ve watched all of Game of Thrones, but it’s something I don’t know if I could do again because of how violent it was. I often forget just how cruel and gruesome that show could be. This is why I absolutely loved A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. It was more lighthearted and uplifting, and focused on making the main character one audiences actually like and root for. Don’t worry though, this show will still satiate the desire for blood, war, and overall macabre wishes. Rather than concentrating on the wealthy and the hunger for power, this new GOT spin showcases the lowest caste and the journey one takes to rise the ranks.
Season one of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is already out now, with 6 episodes available for your viewing pleasure. If you’re as big a fan of the show as I am, fear not, because a second season was also already confirmed.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is streaming on HBO Max.
PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANS
“After Camp Half-Bloods’s border is attacked, Percy Jackson sets off on an epic odyssey into the Sea of Monsters in search of his best friend Grover and the one thing that may save camp — the Golden Fleece. With help from Annabeth, Clarisse, and cyclops Tyson, Percy’s survival is key to stopping Luke, the Titan Kronos and their impending plan to bring down Olympus” (Disney+).
On it’s second season now, Percy Jackson and the Olympians continues Percy’s adventures as he accepts his parentage, powers, and now, siblings! The Sea of Monsters is the second installment in the 5 book trilogy from Rick Riordan, which the TV show replicates. Differing a bit from your stereotypical warlocks and wizards fantasy genres, the Percy Jackson series features Greek mythology. Gods, Goddesses, monsters—all of the concepts that make up Greek myths have basically moved with Western civilization, as Percy, a half-blood son of Poseidon, ventures on quests to save his friends and his home.
Now that the second season is out, this is a perfect time to binge watch both seasons of Percy Jackson and the Olympians back-to-back. Or, even re-watch the first season to recap all that’s happened to Percy and you both can dive into a new plot with sinister monsters and a sea that wants to blow your sails in the wrong direction.
Anchors away!
Percy Jackson and the Olympians is now streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.
OUTLANDER
“The ‘Outlander’ series follows the story of Claire Randall, a married combat nurse from 1945, who is mysteriously swept back in time to 1743 Scotland” (STARZ).
Outlander is back for it’s 8th and final season! it’s safe to say that with all those seasons, this show might take a bit more time to binge-watch . . . grab some popcorn and get comfy.
Outlander is a fantasy show that also replicates parts of our real world. It follows Claire as she is transported in a world vastly different than her own. Rather than finding herself into an era of knights and Kings, she finds herself in Scotland in a time of warriors, political divide, and of course, romance. Outlander has something for everyone—fantasy, historical fiction, sci-fi, drama, love. As the last season beings, now is the time to get on the couch and binge watch before it’s all over!
Outlander and it’s final season is available to watch on STARZ.
THE LEGEND OF VOX MACHINA
“They’re rowdy, they’re ragtag, they’re misfits turned mercenaries for hire. Vox Machina is more interested in easy money and cheap ale than actually protecting the realm. But when the kingdom is threatened by evil, this boisterous crew realizes that they are the only ones capable of restoring justice. What bagn as a simple payday is ow the origin story behind Exandria’s newest heroes” (Amazon Prime).
With 3 seasons out already, The Legend of Vox Machina was a fast-hitting success for the Critical Role gang. Yes, this show is another creation from web-series Critical Role! While The Mighty Nein is a show based on their second Dungeons & Dragons campaign, The Legend of Vox Machina is the groups first (it’s also this authors personal favorite). In Exandria, this group of mercenaries is named protectors of the realm as they fight battle after battle, and drink ale after ale. Easy to binge and digest, you’ll find yourself going through episodes like crazy until you’re waiting like the rest of us fans for the next season.
In good news, however, season 4 was just confirmed and we have a release date! The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 premieres on Prime video on June 3rd, 2026. The upcoming season will continue to follow Vox Machina as they face a new threat on the horizon, teasing the next villain for our friends.
That means you have until June 3rd to watch all three seasons! Get started!
The Legend of Vox Machina is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
