Paramount Is About To Buy Warner Bros! Here’s Why This Is Bad!

Paramount Is About To Buy Warner Bros! Here’s Why This Is Bad!

It’s no secret that ever since they merged with Discovery, Warner Bros has been hemorrhaging money. Their efforts to stop the bleeding have lost them a lot of goodwill with fans, as I’ve repeatedly covered here at TGON. But I didn’t think that things would get so bad that Warner Bros would be willing to sell itself off to the highest bidder. Nor did I imagine that said ultimate bidder would be Paramount! It might not seem like it, but this is bad news, whether you’re a fan of Warner Bros or work in the industry. To find out why, I’m here to explain!

And to remind you guys, this is a reverse of what happened three years ago!

Warner Bros has been on a downward spiral for Years

It all starts with that dreadful merger of Warner Bros and Discovery. That decision put the home of DC Comics, Looney Tunes, and more in heavy debt, and they have been trying to get themselves out of the red ever since. They’ve tried cutting costs, but all they’ve done is anger everyone around them. It got to the point where they chose to sell themselves at auction to help stay afloat. And for a while, it looked as though Netflix would be the one to buy them.

The idea that Netflix, a streaming company that’s been around a quarter of the time Warner Bros has, is crazy enough as it is. It shows just how much the balance of power in the entertainment industry has changed. And personally, it feels like Warner is acknowledging that their attempts with HBO Max were a failure. But then Paramount decided to get in on the action, resulting in a bidding war between Paramount and Netflix. And on February 27th, 2026, Paramount announced that they had won.

This is not good.

An Uprecendented Merger

Now, I was against either company buying up Warner Bros, and I think that they should remain independent. But considering how their actions might lead to bankruptcy, Netflix seemed like the lesser of two evils. But instead, Paramount, one of Warner Bros’ biggest rivals, is about to own them and everything they have. That is going to be bad for a lot of people, and here’s why.

Firstly, it comes down to how capitalism works. In order for it to thrive, it needs industries to be filled with competition. Competitions drive businesses to innovate to stay on top, don’t gain too much power, and make sure customers dont get taken advantage of by bad products. When businesses merge to this extent, it means people have fewer options to choose from. It’s bad enough that Disney has been getting closer to monopolizing entertainment for years, but Warner Bros and Paramount are two of the biggest names in Hollywood. If they merge, there’s going to be fewer options for people to enjoy. Fewer options means customers can’t hurt this new entity in the wallet as effectively when they do things we dont like. Case in point, this means that HBO Max may get shut down and merged with Paramount+.

Secondly, there’s how this will effect the people who work in the industry. Whether you’re an actor to a stage hand, you’ll now have fewer options to go to look for work. In a time when AI is starting to be used en masse to try and save money, work can be hard to find as it is. Having Warner and Paramount fuse will make finding jobs even harder! In addition, this kind of merger means people will eventually lose their jobs or get projects they’ve worked on shut down in the chaos. This has people freaking out online, and for good reason. Their job security has just taken a massive hit!

The merger isn’t set to go through until later this year, but it doesn’t change the fact that these next few months are going to be chaotic. People are going to be scrambling to keep their jobs, we might lose some shows and movies in the works. And crazier still, we might start seeing Warner’s cartoons on Nickelodeon. Time will tell how things play out, but all we can do is hope for the best.
