Still looking for that new holiday obsession? Well why not go off the beaten path and try something new. Triple-A titles will still be there and frankly, who wants to deal with all those day one patches. There are so many good games out there that fly under the radar. Here is my list of underrated games I am looking forward to coming out this December.
If you are anything like me, you believe Halloween and the spooky season should never end. So as we all shutter our windows and brace for the coldest part of the year, it can feel similar to the start of a horror movie. Well here is a secret, we are not alone. Clearly there are game developers that think along the same wave lengths as us. Starting off our list we have a couple horror games.
Sleep Awake
Sleep Awake looks absolutely terrifying. People are disappearing in their sleep from the last habitable city on Earth. In order to combat this reality, the inhabitants of this city have resorted to all manner of experiments and drugs in order to stay awake. For anyone else who has tried to stay awake through multiple nights will know, it does not take long for the shadows to start crawling and whispers to leak out of the corners. Combine that feeling with the threat of an otherworldly plague and death cults and you start to see why Sleep Awake looks scary. This game comes out December 2nd, and I may never sleep again.
Kingdom of Nights
Next is another horror title to keep us awake throughout the long nights of winter. Kingdom of Nights brings all the thrill of Red Dawn to the zombie survivor genre with a fun role-playing game twist. Players will take on a typical fantasy class and explore a 1980s small town. While exploring, players will discover more about the town and the origins of the zombie outbreak. Finding other survivors and recruiting them to your party will be essential to survival. Beautiful pixel art and a heart warming coming of age story makes me hopeful for a fun and well fleshed out role-playing experience. Keep your eye out for this one coming out December 2.
Routine
Something about being inside with all our favorite media must be reminding game developers of the 80s. Routine is another sci-fi horror game based on visions from the 80s. In this game players will explore a CRT era lunar base. However, things on the base quickly go silent. As the old line goes, in space, no one can hear you scream. With a minimal heads-up display, Routine aims to fully immerse the player and create an unnerving, claustrophobic experience. Piece together clues found around the base to figure out what happened to everyone else on the base, before you go quiet too. Look for it coming December 4th.
Cloudheim
Leaving behind the oppressive horror atmosphere we have Cloudheim. A bright and charming co-op role playing game. With an art style and game play that reminds me of Genshin Impact but without the endless fetch quests and unwanted competition with random other players. Cloudheim allows players to team up with their friends to unleash powerful combos and discover new parts of the world. Together you will build and supply a fantasy shop catering to characters all over the world. Working alongside a rogues gallery of cute monsters to help improve efficiency in your shop. There is a whole world out there to discover and Cloudheim presents all the wonders of its world on December 4th.
Paralives
Personally I am always excited to see a new entry in a long established genre. When Palworlds threatened Pokemon’s monopoly I cheered and our next entry may do the same. Paralives comes after the Sims throne for life simulation games. From being able to fully customize your character’s look and home to exploring an open world town full of completely realized characters. Focus on the self, career, or finding love. No matter what you do, twists and turns will pop up and make your story both unique and riveting. I am looking forward to seeing if Paralives scratches that same Sims itch when it comes out, Dec 8th.
Unbeatable
Rhythm action games have had a run of creative and fun games in the last few years. Something about rocking out to amazing music alongside fun bright colours feels amazing. Unbeatable fills this same role with an anime art style displaying the best of the cute girls doing things genre. Playing through the story as Beat, a punk rocker out to make a name for herself. This game blends together slice of life anime story telling with intense music scenes to create an amazing experience that is both light hearted and fun. Add this to your collection of tunes when it comes out December 9th.
